Charters Increase in Texas In January

January saw 140 new charters granted in Texas by the Secretary of State, a rise of 18 percent from December. Total authorized capital stock was 2.829 million, down from 8.411 million in December and 2.854 million a year earlier. Oil firms, manufacturers, and real estate builders led the new filings, with 28, 16, and 11 charters respectively, while 42 were in merchandising.

Nationwide Death Rate Dips in 1931 Amid Economic Slump

Census Bureau figures show the national death rate fell to 1,107.5 per 100 000 in 1931 from 1,133.1 in 1930, with total deaths at 1 322 587 vs 1 343 356. Leading causes were heart disease cancer nephritis cerebral hemorrhage pneumonia and tuberculosis. Personal crises rose to 20 088. homicides reached 11 160.
