The excerpt traces Santa Fe becoming Spain’s northern frontier headquarters in 1609 and San Antonio’s rise as its nearest ruling city by 1718. It notes San Antonio as county seat and key trading point after Texas became a republic and then a state, highlighting three centuries of frontier history.
Spanish missionaries moved through Ballinger and Concho regions with priests and pearl seekers. Fray Salas baptized Jumanos near San Angelo. 1650s expeditions from New Mexico reached the Concho river. The Concho’s name supposedly comes from Spanish for shell, with pearls and buffalo hides traded. After 1718, trade routes linked San Antonio and Santa Fe, then Texas independence followed. Fort Chadbourne and Camp Colorado era mark Coke county’s early white settlement and the first recorded wedding around 1855.
