The Coke County Fair kicks off in Robert Lee with 4 p.m. Friday events and a Saturday slate in Bronte and Robert Lee. Bronte High School seniors and Robert Lee students are highlighted in Beau and Belle presentations, with a full livestock show and contests including Bubble Gum Blowing and Sack Races.
Mrs Irving M Cumbie 79 longtime Bronte resident died September 10 in West Coke County Nursing Home where she had lived since May. Funeral services were held September 13 at First United Methodist Church Bronte with Rev Earle Lewis and Rev Cecil Harper officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters a son five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
A charter bus will travel to the Lawrence Welk Show in Abilene on October 16 with pickup from Bronte and Robert Lee areas. The trip, including show ticket and reserved seats, costs $1750 per person with a $10 deposit due by October 2. Coke County residents contact Mrs. R W Rees in Bronte. If at least 39 sign up, a Bronte start and return service will operate for those riders.
The Shorthorns were set to play the Bullpups in Eden last night after idle time. They’ll travel to Robert Lee on Thursday September 23 to face the Dogies at 7 p.m. The team won 6-0 over Miles in their only season game.
Mr and Mrs J F Hughes attended the funeral of his brother Jack Hughes aged 73 who died September 9. He leaves his wife Mattie nine children 34 grandchildren eight great grandchildren four brothers and two sisters.
Forty one members attended Bronte Senior Citizens monthly luncheon at the Bronte Recreation Center last Thursday. Don Edminston played piano and a sumptuous noon meal was served. A State Health Department representative took blood pressures.
Julius Samp Raney 77 of Seagraves died last Wednesday in a Brownfield hospital after a brief illness. Born May 20 1898 in Coke County he lived near Blackwell before moving to Seagraves in 1952. Survivors include two sons two daughters 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral service Saturday at Blackwell United Methodist Church with Rev Floyd Richardson. Burial in Blackwell Cemetery.
An organizational meeting for evening adult vocational classes sponsored by Texas Technical Institute Rolling Plains Campus will be held Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in Robert Lee School Cafeteria. Courses include Office Cluster Welding and Nurses Aide. Office Cluster covers typing bookkeeping filing and office practice. The program targets individuals seeking new trades or skill upgrades.
Three more cases of screw worms have been located in Coke County swelling the year's total to 12 cases. The latest cases were submitted by J. B. Mackey from his place four miles northeast of Bronte by Bill Hamilton five miles southwest of Blackwell and by Tom Rives from his Hayrick place 12 miles northeast of Robert Lee.
An important county meeting for predator control operators is set for Monday night September 20 at 8 p.m. in the county courtroom. A four man trouble shooting team will discuss surveying for predators and arranging contacts for the survey. The Coke County trapper situation will also be discussed. All operators are invited to attend.
A reunion of present and former residents of the Fort Chadbourne Community will be held all day Sunday October 3 in the Bronte Community Center. About 40 persons who have lived in the community are invited.
Bronte High School girls volleyball finished second at a Sweetwater tournament last Saturday after beating Lubbock and Ballinger before losing the final to Snyder. The A team improved to 5-1 with wins in two matches, while the B team also defeated Sweetwater. Upcoming matches include at San Angelo and Miles with games starting in the evening.
Ivey Motor Co of Robert Lee sponsors the 1st annual Punt Pass and Kick contest to be held Saturday Sept 18 at 2 p.m. at Hickman Field Robert Lee. The event is open to youths ages 8 to 13 with eligibility rules for 14 year olds. Registration desks are at Ivey Motor Co and Bronte elementary. Entries due by 1 45 p.m. Cumbie Ivey Jr urged county participation.
The ABC Tournament is scheduled for Sunday at the local golf course starting at 1 15 p m. All golfers are invited to participate.
