Historical Marker to Honor Butterfield Trail Near Bronte

A Texas Historical Marker will honor the Southern Overland Mail Service Butterfield Stage at US 277 and US 70 north of Bronte Coke County. The 27 by 42 inch aluminum marker notes the 1858 1861 route from St Louis to El Paso and a 25 day one way trip with 200 dollar fare.

Rites Held for Mrs Stephenson of San Angelo

Funeral services for Mrs. J. L. Stephenson 78 of San Angelo were conducted at Lakeview Baptist Church with Reverends Bryan Ross and Young Houston presiding. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Bronte. Survivors include four sons and two daughters.

Coke County ends 1966 vehicle sticker deadline

About 56 percent of Coke County motor vehicles have the 1966 inspection sticker. With 3,015 registered vehicles and 1,69 bearing new stickers, the April 15 deadline looms. A patrolman warned drivers that April 16 penalties include pink slips for driving without a sticker.

Longhorn Trackmen Take First In Saturday Meet

Bronze Longhorn tracksters won their own meet in a four team event here on Saturday. Team standings show Longhorns with 61 percent of points led by Royce Lee who anchored relays and won the broad jump and 440 yard dash. Other scorers included Douglas McCutchen Larry Corley and Buddy Vosburg with multiple top finishes for Bronte Robert Lee Miles and Blackwell.

Coke 4 H Leaders Attend workshop in Coke County

Ten Coke County 4 H leaders attended Extersion Sub-District Seven workshop at Angelo State College Memorial Student Center on March 21 and 22. State staff led sessions on 4 H club structure philosophy records projects and improving club work.

Mrs. Rutherford Honored on 92nd Birthday

Mrs. Mary Rutherford celebrated her 92nd birthday Sunday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Adair. Out of town guests included daughter Mrs. Carson Tester of Edwardsville and son A. V. Rutherford of Concan, plus relatives from Uvalde San Angelo Midland and Levelland. Local friends also called to wish her well.

WSCS Two-Part Study Led by Rev Masterson at Methodist

Rev A S Masterson led the first of a two part study on Struggle of Decency at the WSCS meeting with Modgling hostesses. Mrs Russell opened with a prayer and the session closed after members recited the WSCS motto. Present were Mmes Rawlings Sims Percifa Ragsdale Burroughs and Miss Lizzie Brock.

Mrs. Winnie Tidwell and grandchildren Donna Stevens from Happy Valley and Jimmy and She lene Tidwell from Bronte visited her son Theron Tidwell and family in Klondike. Their Sunday visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hudman of Abilene.
