Senate defense bill outlines 1955 appropriations and force structure
The Senate Appropriations Committee recommends defense funding of 28.86 billion dollars for the year ending June 30 1955, with aircraft procurement accounting for about 22 percent of defense spending. The plan foresees 137 Air Force wings by July 1957 and Navy air groups, plus Marine air wings, while total shipbuilding nears one billion dollars and the active fleet sits at 1080 ships. Armed Forces total about 3.33 million personnel, with gradual reductions to 3.047 million by next June across Army Air Force Navy and Marine Corps.
