Texas lawmakers push 14 constitutional amendments for 1972 ballot
In a regular session the Texas Legislature agreed to submit 14 proposed amendments to voters in November 1972. Major items include HJR 61 permitting a constitutional revision convention and pay raises for legislators and top officials. Other measures cover governor terms, equal rights, homestead tax exemptions, and fiscal rules for local governments. Unemployment improved to 3.8 percent with 181,000 jobless, while liquor tax increases are approved generating about 28 million in new revenue over two years. Courts addressed Sunday sales, trial verdicts, and signatures, and opinions clarified redistricting and drug regulations.
