Plant Tomato Seeds Now for Early Tomatoes

A home gardening note advises planting tomato seeds immediately in a small plant box or hotbed to sprout within six to eight weeks and transplant after frost danger ends. It details box size 18 inches by four inches, soil mix of compost and loam, sowing three seeds per inch, and spacing four inches between rows.

Tomato Seedling Spacing and Transplanting Tips

Drought affects early growth when temperatures drop. Thin two to three inch seedlings to four inches apart, saving thinned plants for neighbors or extra boxes. After six to eight weeks the plants reach about eight inches, then transplant outdoors after frost danger passes and water well before planting.

Seedling Prep Timetable and Garden Timing

Start plant box preparation about seven weeks before the average last frost date to have tomato seedlings ready. The notice appears in want ads as a gardening tip.
