Austin, February 8, 1945. State Health Officer Dr. Geo W Cox reports pneumonia caused over 2 800 deaths last year in Texas. The disease peaks in winter and spring and is often linked to neglect of a cold. Early physician treatment is crucial. The public is advised to keep homes comfortably cool and seek care promptly for severe colds.
A medical note urges early physician consultation when a patient suspects a cold. It warns that pneumonia may begin as a cold and seeking advice early allows timely treatment if pneumonia develops.
As of January 7, 1945, 50 percent of steers, heifers and cows are set aside for government canning, with 60 percent of higher grade beef and 80 percent of cutter and canner beef also allocated. Pork meat excluding lard sees about 50 percent set aside, while lambs and veal receive 40 to 60 percent and 50 percent respectively. Regulators cite war needs to explain rationing and supply difficulties for beef, lamb, pork, and veal.
