The text describes Christmas suppression in 1644 by Puritans in England, with advocates facing arrest and ongoing underground activity. It notes a 1648 pamphlet Canterbury Christmas recounting Canterbury’s December 22 actions, proclaiming Christmas and other festivals should be stopped, causing deprivation and unrest when not observed.
A rare pamphlet from the era, The Examination and Trial of Old Father Christmas, depicts a judge Hate-hate and Sheriff Leonard Lovepeace presiding as Santa is brought to the bar. He is acquitted but cautioned to focus on spiritual duties over festive excess. Christmas reestablishment by Charles III is noted.
