Bronte High School opened basketball season Tuesday with girls A team and both boys squads at Highland. The girls lost a close 36 to 32, the A boys won 38 to 27, and the B team cruised 42 to 18. Norma Pruitt led scorers.
Brownfield hosted the season finale as Bronte fans praised Sam Williams for his ambulance readiness. Coach Raughton lauded the team’s effort after practicing only one and a half hours, with basketball to follow for the girls and boys in Bola tournament action against Christoval and Roscoe upcoming.
Bronte junior high girls lose 19 to 29 and boys 42 to 26 at Robert Lee. Jolene Vaughn scores 9 for the girls and Melissa Lee adds 7. Wesley Ash leads the boys with 13, while Danny Cooper and Donnie Thompson each score 5.
Bronze Noon Lions Club sponsors a toy drive to fix and give to needy children at Christmas. People with usable toys should drop them at Charlie Rarsdale's Barber Shop.
Bronte Jaycees hold Christmas drawings on December 10 and 17 at 3 30 p m on Main Street with a turkey shoot both days. Prizes valued at 200 to 300 dollars come from local merchants, with registration required at participating stores. Winners must be present to claim prizes. one prize per family per day.
A full house at Bronte school hosted a joint Lions Club ladies night with a barbecue dinner followed by a talk by Fuller Self of Brady. Self mixed humor with a serious call for individualism under the motto Think Big. Harvey Palmer of San Angelo and club presidents presided.
Mrs Ann Adams Jayroe and two children Steven Jr and Teresa of San Antonio were injured in a Thanksgiving day crash on Highway 27 near Ingram just outside Kerrville. A pickup driven by Mrs Dorothy Hardy of Ingram collided with the Adams wagon. All were treated at a Kerrville hospital with bruises and lacerations. The Jayroe family recently returned from England and are staying in San Antonio while Major Jayroe serves in Vietnam.
Tickets on sale for the Junior Class play to be staged December 16 in the Bronte School Auditorium. The mystery comedy is titled If a Body Meets a Body and is presented by the class of 1968. Prices are 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for students.
Mrs Bryam Yarbrough of Robert Lee named one of 20 outstanding county historical survey committee chairs for 1966. She chairs the Coke County committee and helped lead the RAMPS Program to Record, Appreciate, Mark, Preserve and Survey Texas history. The acknowledgment came at the Texas State Historical Survey Committee annual meeting in Fort Worth December 1-3.
Vega Longhorns defeated Bronte 27 to 22 in the regional final at Cub Stadium Brownfield. Bronte led 7-0, Vega tied 7-7 at halftime, then surged with 13 points in 50 seconds of the fourth, aided by a strong Vega defense and key plays by McCutchen and Pingel.
