Sixty visitors attended a Bronte School kindergarten program directed by Mrs. Bob Shields. Children sang in English and Spanish, showed films of activities, and parents inspected classroom centers. Mrs. Shields praised parent turnout as a pleasant surprise for the new program designed to prepare five year olds for first grade.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lela Mae Shamblin 77 will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Blackwell Baptist Church with Rev. G. K. Corley and Rev. Jim Clark. Burial follows in Blackwell Cemetery. She died Thursday at Bronte Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Bell County December 23 1892 and lived in Coke County since 1906. Survivors include daughter Pauline Wadley of San Antonio three sons Harold Hamilton Amarillo Jack Hamilton Dallas Bill Hamilton Blackwell sister Lois Robson Sacramento Calif two half brothers Jewell and Howard Jones Sacramento Calif and seven grandchildren.
Work starts on a 40 bed nursing home on U S 277 in Bronte. The facility will be owned and operated by East Coke County Hospital District and site preparation is underway in the town’s south area.
The Longhan Band Booster Club will meet Monday December 7 at 2 p.m. in the Band Hall. All club members are urged to be present.
The Bronte Motor Co building was damaged Tuesday night when struck by a 1964 Chevrolet driven by Jake Henry Sr. of Ballinger. A nearby parked car was also hit. Highway Patrolman Bobby Hart said the crash occurred as Henry drove south on Highway 277. Henry was taken to Shannon Hospital for treatment of injuries. The car sustained heavy damage.
Robert Lee teams sweep Bronte on a busy Tuesday night winning three games. The boys beat Steers 54 to 41 with Bruce Pruitt top scorer and 14 points. In girls A action Jolene Vaughn 13 and Melissa Lee 8 led scoring while Bronte’s Andra Cooper and Dawn Cumbie had 10 each in girls B, a 34 32 Bronte win. The teams head to Roscoe tournament this weekend and play Rotan next Tuesday.
During December 5 through 12 at White's Auto Store in Bronte, seniors hand out coupons offering customers a five percent commission to the class. Shoppers who present coupons at purchase help fund their school, with the seniors urging friends to buy at White's and to take the coupon along.
Bronte High School alumni Doug McCutchen and Davis Corley, sophomores on the Texas Tech football team, have sparked the 8 3 Raiders this season. McCutchen set a Texas Tech rushing record with 1068 yards, joining a SWC 1 000-yard club, while Corley anchors defense and has recovered key fumbles. The pair, both 1968 graduates, hail from Bronte with a 999 population, and Tech faces Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl on December 19, with the game televised.
Two Bronze FFA teams earned first place in a recent district contest and were to receive award banners at an awards banquet in San Angelo Thursday night. The Senior Farm Skills team includes Lynn Lawdon Rance Brunson Bobby Skelton and Mike Arrott. they showcased tire troughs planters and stock feeders. The other winning team featured Danny Carper Larry Hooper Mark Murtishaw Randy Gibba Jerry Brock Brian Pruitt Gary Skelton Brad Reed Stephen Patterson and Andrea Cooper the district sweetheart.
