Artillery Base Ball Team Feted By Col Merriman

The Bristol Artillery baseball team closed its first season in twilight league with a banquet in Artillery Hall hosted by Col Alfred M. Merriman M D. Managers and players were honored for winning the second half and for sportsmanship. Speaker Maurice C Smith Jr praised the team and Dr Merriman’s leadership. Several players were absent and the group pledged to support Bernard Quartaro who underwent surgery at St Joseph’s Hospital.

Governor Green Attends Bristol Shoe Factory Banquet

Governor Theodore Francis Green addressed the testimonial banquet honoring officials of the New England Shoe Mfg Co which has begun production in Bristol Rhode Island. He praised the Bristol Taxpayers Association and urged support for the NRA program while outlining expected employment and payroll from the new plant.

Communist Effort to Defeat NRA Rotary Club Topic

Mr Joseph L Kamp of the Constitutional Educational League addressed the Rotary Club on communism as a menace and its aim to defeat the NRA He cited riots and political moves across several states and displayed Communist literature as evidence He warned that organized action is needed to curb the movement and protect American institutions The meeting was led in president Getchell’s absence by the superintendent of schools with guests including District Governor Merritt and Police Chief Kavanaugh.

New Road Speed Zoned Between Warren and Town

The four lane highway between Warren and the town was speed zoned on Wednesday with discs marking limits. Violators will be summoned to Fifth District Court. Zoning runs from the railroad crossing to Bridge street at 30 mph, to Vincent's Baseline at 35 mph, and to Colt Drive Bristol at 40 mph. Hope street 30 mph to town bridge. Boulevard steps may follow at intersections.

Bristol Garden Club Holds Annual Flower Show at Holmes House

The Bristol Garden Club showcased 22 entries with ten in dining room and twelve in living room classes. First prizes went to Mrs. Charles B. Rockwell Jr. for Kentucky blue Morning Glories and Miss Agnes Herreshoff for orange marigolds. judges included Mrs. Francis Bates and Mrs. Austin Levy. A post show collation followed. The club voted to enter the Fiskeville Fair on Sept 21 with Mrs. Wm. L. McKee directing entries.

Brockton Pony Winners Continue Fair Success

Miss Nancy Allen daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry DeW Allen and John W Church Jr son of Town Clerk and Mrs John W Church won ribbons in the Pony classes at the Brockton Fair this week. Allen's Miss Woodford took second in Junior Jumping while Church's Flying High placed sixth in the same class and later earned third in Pony and fourth in Horsemanship. Flying High also finished fifth in Pony on Thursday amid stiff competition.
