Raw Sewage Dump Prompts Harbor Fishing Ban

Work at the Oliver Street pumping station requires discharging raw sewage into the bay. Nearly all harbor waters are closed to shell fishers for a week from yesterday noon to Sept 1 noon. The sewer construction committee leads the first phase of the overhauling project, with previous restrictions in place last month. Off limits area runs north of Middle Ground Buoy and Can Buoy No 3, west of Usher Cove to Walker's Island.

Agatiello Named Major of Bristol Campaign Division

General Frederick T. T. Goff announces Anthony F. Agatiello of Guiteras Junior High School becomes Major of the Educational Division for the Fall Red Feather Campaign supporting the Bristol Community Chest. Bristol Women's Club Holds First Meeting at Guiteras House

The Bristol Women's Club opened its season with 50 members at the Guiteras House. President Mrs Howard L. House announced hospitality and budget co chairs. Artists Miss Mary Freeman harpist and reader Mrs Elizabeth Cook Myrick received warm attendance. Next month features an illustrated talk on Williamsburg restoration by William Conkey.

Mary Locke Howe Buried at Juniper Hill

Mary Emily Locke Howe died September 8 at 221 Hope St Bristol. She leaves husband Wal lis Eastburn Howe and six children including George Locke Howe and Herbert M Howe. Funeral held at St Michael's Church with burial at Juniper Hill Cemetery. Attendees included US Senator Theodore Green.

Rhode Island Meet Highlights Ranger Corps Hosting Winners

The Bristol Ranger Bugle and Drum Corps led the junior male class, while Warwick Bugle and Drum Corps won the senior male title. St Agnes Fife and Drum Corps of Providence earned top score and the Stelio Pappas Memorial Trophy, with Paiva-Freitas Trophy also going to St Agnes. Leicester and Jamestown claimed female crowns as Bristol hosts the Rhode Island Fifers Drummers and Buglers Association event at Guiteras Field.

School Committee Will Check On Minimum Ages

The Bristol PTA plans a clothing sale at Reynolds School on Saturday October 6 with a food sale at the same time. Mrs George Snell chairs the ways and means committee and leads the fair, assisted by Mrs Fulton Farrell and others. Donors contribute clothing on an 80 20 split in favor of the donor, with PTA receiving 20 percent.

Rescue Squad Helps at Local Drummers and Buglers Contest

The Bristol Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad treated 15 casualities at the R I Fifers Drummers and Buglers Association Competition at Guiteras Field on Sunday September 9 from noon to 7 pm. Michael Flynn led a six member team with no physician needed. Faints cuts bruises and a sprained foot were among the on field treatments.

Fitzgerald warns starting school too soon harms pupils

The School Committee discussed minimum entering age for first grade with Superintendent Edward J Fitzgerald endorsing six as ideal and noting early start can hinder learning. Transportation rates, temporary teaching appointments, insurance bids, and teacher leaves were also addressed. Evening school program plans and facility use by local groups were approved or discussed.
