James F. Meiggs chairman of the Bristol Salvage Committee announces the final paper drive will be held Sunday and a tin collection will follow. He urges secure bundles for curbside handling and asks volunteers to contact him. Proceeds fund local recreational programs for children.
Robert H. Dubuc of Beach Terrace serves as Fire Control Operator on the destroyer USS Borie. The ship was struck by a kamikaze dive on the signal bridge, a 500 pound bomb exploding nearby. The attack killed the air defense officer and 34 enlisted men. Dubuc escaped injury, stationed near the impact.
Miss Marian Maisano daughter of Mr and Mrs Salvatore Maisano of 36 Washington street received a scholarship to the Rhode Island Conservatory of Music. The pianist earned the award after the school’s annual audition held Saturday and will study under Maurice Anthony Lewis at the conservatory.
Pfc Joseph Oliveira, 19, a rifleman with the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 7th Division, earned the Combat Infantryman Badge after the Okinawa campaign. A Bristol native and Colt Metro High School graduate, he previously worked for U S Rabbit Company. Parents Mr and Mrs Thomas Olivena live at 1 Sherravenue Bristol R I.
The Rev. Herbert D. Graetz, pastor since July 1929, resigns from the First Congregational Church to take a call at the Congregational Church of Lake Worth Florida. He cites his two ill children and notes the resignation becomes effective October 15 after a Sunday meeting and a planned Thursday vote.
The Bristol Garden Club will meet on Wednesday September 19 at 2 30 pm at Upper Longfield the home of Mrs Henrys W Boynton Co hostess Mrs Griswold Boynton Guests include Mrs Charles H Stott president of the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs Mrs LeRoy Elde and Mrs Philip Batchelder of Rumford who will speak on House Plants at the meeting.
The School Committee met with Acting Superintendent James Sullivan and approved Edward J. Rinaldi as Acting Principal of Guiteras Junior High replacing Sullivan. Helen Newbold was named temporary Latin and social studies teacher. vacancies at other schools were filled or delayed pending discharge of soldiers. Enrollment figures, bus petition, and upcoming programs were discussed with tuition rates set for senior to elementary levels.
The Excelsior Tennis Club schedules a Thursday 2 PM bridge for club benefit with a door prize. Doubles play features Robert M Nelson Carl H Witherell Seth Paull and Howard Quick. Tables sold include Mrs William W Perry Mrs Charles B Cole Mrs Earle P Mathewson and others with donations from listed contributors.
Pfe D'Allesio is welcomed home by 28 relatives from Providence, Pawtucket, and Bristol after two years in Germany with the 137th Regiment Santa Fe Unit. He wears five battle stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Infantry Badge, and European and American Theatre ribbons. He was transferred from Troop Transport Command to the Infantry.
Chairman Anthony W DuPont of the Bristol Sewer Commission invites citizens and taxpayers to visit the Sewage Disposal Plant tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. A staff member will be present to answer questions about repairs nearing completion on the digester.
The Hope Circle No 70 Daughters of Isabella met at the K of C Hall on State Street and voted to stage a Whist Party on October 2 in the K of C rooms. They also approved weekly afternoon Whist gatherings beginning this Thursday and discussed forming a bowling team. next meeting is October 1 to elect officers.
Frederick T Goff is appointed head of the Industrial Division of the United War Fund Drive in Bristol by Fred E Lohse head of the Bristol County Division. He will arrange a census of industrial workers to set a fair Bristol quota.
