Women’s Relief Corps Visit Soldiers’ Home Event in Newport

Members of Lawton Warren and other Rhode Island Relief Corps visited the Soldiers' Home on Sunday. The program featured readings, Civil War songs, piano accompaniments, and remarks by Ezra Dixon and other officials. Special gifts were given to two veterans celebrating birthdays.

Nut League Basketball Opens With Four Teams Competing

The Nut league opened at the YMCA gym with four teams Walnuts beat Chestnuts 32 to 11 amid fouls. Williams led Walnuts, St Angelo showed speed. Salzano and Furtado top Chestnuts. In a closer 29 to 20 win, Peanuts defeated Cocoanuts with Capucci starring and Bisbane strong defensively. Cardoza was Cocoanuts best.

The town's social highlight marked the Mt Hope bridge dedication with a luncheon at Mrs Wm G Brenneke’s home. Over 90 guests from Bristol New London New York Hartford and Providence attended including Mrs Charles F Herreshoff who is 91. The house was festooned with flags and bunting and the buffet luncheon followed the parade and ceremonies. assistants included Mrs A M Merriman Mrs Ben M Mac Dougall Mrs Wm W Perry Mrs Stanley Friswell and Mrs Carroll Lawton.

Third Rifle Match Between Bristol Train of Artillery Teams

The third match in a series between the Bristol Train of Artillery and 243d Coast Artillery will be held on the indoor range at BooT A Armors on State Street Thursday evening. In the second match last Thursday the BTA won by 122 points. For the three positions Ty A and 704 Battery CS582 led, with Capt Ralph Bennett making 147 for the BTA and Taeut Moren 143 for the Battery.

A record Sunday turnout near the Mt Hope bridge drew an est 18 000 vehicles from Rhode Island and nearby states. Traffic clogged Ferry road and Hope street as Chief Kavanaugh and officers directed flow to keep routes open for emergencies. About 8450 cars crossed the bridge from 8 am to 8 pm with 5969 by 4 pm. state troopers managed busy Bristol and Portsmouth approaches. A stalled oil tanker later delayed passage at the Tiverton Stone Bridge.
