A ramshackle multi‑board system in a Connecticut town with 28 elected units is cited as evidence for replacing with a full‑time manager and single elected council. Farmington’s 1947 consolidation into one government with a seven‑member council and manager improved budgeting, planning, and services.
The Bristol Council Knights of Columbus will meet Wednesday at 7:30 PM in State Street council chambers. Rev. David J. Coffey, diocesan director of social action, will lecture and lead a discussion afterward. He is noted for directing the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and overseeing diocesan radio and TV activities. Michael A. Orefice will introduce him.
Frederick T. Goff reports the Red Feather residential drive netted about 300 dollars less than last year with 1960 dollars pledged so far. He notes some returns are incomplete and urges pledges of any size payable when convenient, with Rhode Island Community Chest billing later.
St Michael's Episcopal Church held its 30th annual harvest festival at an 11 am service. Proceeds will aid St Andrew's School in Barrington. Chair Mrs John W Wall led the event with help from Mrs J Foster Price and Mrs J William Wood. Altar Guild decorators and donations included 200 pounds sugar 159 cans of food 85 pounds flour and various vegetables and cereals. Food was collected Saturday as well as Sunday.
The Amicae Guild of the Baptist Church celebrated 25 years as a missionary guild with a covered dish supper at 122 Ghureh Street hosted by Mrs. Zerferman Vieira. A program included greetings by President Mrs. Otis M. Bailey Sr, songs, Scripture, Bible boat lore, and reports from Kingston conference attendees.
Michael A. DeLeo, national commander of the Italian American World War Veterans, will receive the key to Youngstown at a Sunday banquet. Mayor Charles P Henderson will present the honor as DeLeo tours the Youngstown Steel Mills Saturday morning and appears on a radio interview later that day.
King Philip Little League officials invite all regular members and others interested in next year to attend an open meeting at the YMCA on November 2 at 8 pm. President Roger W Pigeon notes emphasis on planning for a four team league and invites volunteers, with umpire training and support from Anthony E Agatiello. The Bigger League will use 75 foot baselines, 53 foot pitching, base stealing, soft spike shoes, and 225 foot foul lines.
The Children of Mary Sodality of St. Elizabeth's Church will hold their annual harvest dance on Thursday at Independent Hall. Music will be by Joseph Cabral and his orchestra with Miss Mary Oliver chairing the committee and a long list of volunteers assisting.
Dr. D V A Capone has accepted the chairmanship of the Blood Program Committee of the Bristol Branch of the American Red Cross. Bosworth Sr. notes Capone has already donated blood on 19 occasions and will lead the Bristol program. further program details will be released soon.
The Bristol Senior High School will host its annual Hallowe'en party tomorrow from 7 30 to 1 pm. The organizing committee is led by Joanne Squatrito with Patricia Voccio Marie Camacho Robert Caizzi Louise Murray Frances Machado Raymond Sousa Raymond Barlow Barbara Coelho and Nancy Buckle. Faculty and guests are invited, with ghosts and goblins as honored guests. Faculty advisors are Mrs Alice Pahline and Ralph K Nash.
Chief Francis J. McGovern and staff fear losing exhibit cases as the Historical Society moves out. With cases gone there will be little desk space left and only shaky tables and a few chairs remain. McGovern would welcome any spare tables to keep town records off the floor.
The golden jubilee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church pastor Rev. Joseph Sorzana was marked with an 11 am Mass led by the celebrant, assisted by Rev. Charles Curran and Rev. Henrique Rocha. Bishop Russell J. McVinney praised Sorzana. A testimonial dinner at Midway House drew 250+ with a $500 purse, funded by parish groups. Bristol Knights of Columbus gave a spiritual bouquet. Michael DeLeo acted as toastmaster.
More than 2,500,000 trees and shrubs were planted on surface mined areas in Western Pennsylvania this season. The effort beautifies scenery and serves as a key conservation measure.
The Zoning Board of Review unanimously approved John and Kath ry n LaFazia s petition for a setback variance at 1079 Hope Street after two months of hearings. The board cited eight reasons including that only inches separate the building from the north lot line and moving it would not harm neighboring property. The LaFazia building sits about 4.2 and 4.48 feet from the lot line, well under the five foot minimum.
Possibility that tennis courts may be constructed on the Common engages Bill Fischer of New York and interessered Bristol residents. The Rotary Club studies the project as it remains in feasibility, while Fischer who organized the Excelsior Tennis Club fifty years ago would welcome renewed tennis activity in the town.
Bristol visitor Bill Fischer known as Bull Fischer for 25 years chaired the U S Lawn Tennis Association Ranking Committee from 1923 to 1948. He helped build a premier reference library at 120 Broadway New York containing what may be the world’s finest collection of lawn tennis literature.
A renowned statistician of tennis holds a large collection of literature on the sport. His files include books pamphlets periodicals year books annuals handbooks guides and scrapbooks. Also present are USLTA championship programs Davis Cup and Wightman Cup materials and assorted clippings.
Bill born in New York on December 8, 1882 spent summers in Bristol and joined Newport visits watching Casino tennis matches. He claims to have seen every American tennis match at the wan championship and helped found Excelsior Tennis Records, shaping local sports history.
The subject held numerous roles in national and Eastern associations, including chairing the ranking committee and eight years on the rules committee. He served as executive officer and vice president of various organizations, with ties to New York Indoor and Metropolitan Indoor Teams clubs.
