A Friday special council meeting reported influenza waning and lifted bans on saloons and taverns while keeping movie houses bowling alleys and pool rooms closed for now. Mayor advised reopening today. policy on age limits for police suspended.
Public schools, closed for three weeks due to influenza, will reopen tomorrow following an adjourned School Committee meeting. Doctors Teller and Merriman reported the illness waning and recommended midweek reopening with teachers notified by Secretary Philip Brady. The committee also debated dances at Colt High and considered hiring Col Hathaway as drill master for the Colts Cadets.
Bristol raises over four hundred thousand dollars for the Fourth Liberty Loan with $400,000 in major subscriptions and numerous smaller pledges. Key contributors include United States Rubber Company $150,000 Cranston Worsted Mills $200,000 Col P Colt $50,000 and many factory and women's committees. The town reports 4087 subscribers and notes strong participation by National India Rubber Company employees and the Red Feather Repeater's Club campaign.
The First District Board settled 341 exemption claims, mostly for air service, at the State House Friday. Bristol resident John W. Wood, 59 Collins Street, had his claim denied and was placed in class 1 as a man held for military service unless exempted by prior boards.
Annual meeting at the State Street M E Church home of Mrs Fred Blaisdell reviewed secretary and treasurer reports. Elected for the coming year were President Anna R Thompson First Vice President Harriet Peckham Second Vice President Fred G Blaisdell Secretary-Treasurer Mary E Gravelin Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Seraphine Place and Harriet Peckham to the Literature Committee.
The Colt Junior A A football team will face Warren A C on Child Street grounds Warren on Sunday Oct 27. A strong rivalry exists with Warren A C confident of victory while the Allssells boast of bringing the bacon home to Bristol. Junior players are asked to attend practice at Bristol Common 7 30 this evening.
Rhode Island with a quota of 50 million dollars has over subscribed by at least 10 million. Every town or city in the state met its allotment with some exceeding it. Nationally, six billion dollars in bonds were reportedly sold, a record financial effort.
October events list dances at Colt Memorial High School and Columbia Hall hosted by local clubs. A Tenth annual Bristol County Poultry Association exhibition is slated for December at the G A R Hall with dates December 10 11 and 12.
