New life for Children's Grove
Bristol youths from the Highlands labored this summer and fall to improve theChildren's Grove at Gibson Pond. Daniel Knowlton, nephew of donor Henry Maitland Gibson, organized a volunteer effort through the Children's Grove Corporation. A large team of local youngsters joined the project, turning attention from vandalism to constructive community service.

Mt Hope land dispute ends with cancellation of Brown lease
Mt Hope four acre site previously leased to Brown University in 1975 by former town administrator Nunes has been rejected by the town council. Town Administrator Anthony Agatiello informed Brown University the town will not lease the land, following years of disagreement over the lease’s validity and insurance costs. The town sought no immediate use or funds for insuring or improving the property, which has remained vacant.

Bid controversy forces resignation over school insurance contract
Bristol Schools awarded a 2.75 per student accident insurance contract to Roland Derosier of East Providence. He distributed a brochure for a $3 plan without approved bids while a 25 cent reduced premium option was offered. Barbara Edler, chair of the bid subcommittee, resigned saying the bidding process was a farce after the School Committee supported Derosier. Edler had alerted the state Insurance Commissioner to possible unethical practices and alleged bid violations, suggesting the second bidder, James J Riley Inc., be considered.
