Seaman First Class Michael F Catalano In Tokyo Bay V J Day

Michael F Catalano 23 seaman first class was aboard the USS Briscoe in Tokyo Bay on Victory Day as Japan surrendered. His ship trained for Jap homeland landings but helped ferry occupation troops to Tokyo Bay. He previously worked for U S Rubber Co. and earned the American Theatre Asiatic Pacific and Philippines Liberation ribbons.

Bronze Star for John F. Castro in Manila battle

Corporal John F Castro of the 37th Infantry Division earned the Bronze Star for heroism on Luzon during the Manila attack. The gunner moved his self propelled howitzer within 50 yards of the Postoffice Building, faced heavy fire, and helped knock out fortifications enabling American infantry advances. He previously received Good Conduct Medal Combat Infantry Badge and ribbons for Asia Pacific and Philippine Liberations with battle stars.

This Is Your State Guard! Demonstration at Cranston Stadium

Nearly 200 Rhode Island State Guard troops led by Maj William Twomey will stage a floodlit show at Cranston Stadium on Monday October 22 at 800 PM. The event features drills from 21 Company G with Sgts Pacheco Lima and a sobering view of combat training including bayonet drill judo and unarmed defense. Demonstrations of booby traps foxholes smoke bombs and Molotov cocktails illustrate the rigorous field training and need to keep the State Guard at full strength for emergencies.

Two Bristol Sailors Serve On USS Butner Transport

Two Bristol men serving aboard the USS Butner on the USS General H. W. Butner ferried 5,000 servicemen back to the States from the Western Pacific for discharges. Butner, commissioned January 1944, had previously ferried troops to Europe, India and across the Pacific.
