Administrative personnel of the Ground Observer Corps met with Civil Defense Director Wilfred F. Tetreault to plan Bristol participation in a national volunteer registration drive by the U.S. Air Force for November 11 to 27. The Bristol group will hold a mass meeting at a suitable school auditorium inviting local industrial and civic groups. Tetreault will present GOC wings to 14 Bristol corps members who have served six months. The Bristol corps now has 68 volunteers and seeks more especially women through Regina C. Farley. The drive aims to enlist teenagers, including a possible high school assembly appearance. Present were Nelson G. Beals, Alton Fletcher, and Miss Farley.
First Lt. Herbert Silva announced new members for Battery D 456th A W Bn Organized Reserve Corps. Privates DeCastro Brown Pe and Lt. Joseph Beck join or transfer, with Beck described as a valuable asset. The unit will continue night communications training and screen exclusive Korean War films for the public.
Bristol residents are invited to a Citizens Charter League meeting at the YMCA at 7:30 pm to learn about a proposed council manager charter. Charles B. Rockwell, league chair, will host former town council presidents Floyd Huestis and Dr. Samuel D. Clark as speakers.
Colt Memorial gridsters dominated Coventry 33 to 0 at Guite ras Field in heavy weather. Annarummo led the offense with ground gain and a touchdown set, while Medeiros added a five yard score and a 43 yard TD after an interception. Carvalho caught an 18 yard TD pass from Manny Marshall as Colt pushed its season scoring to 100 in four games. The win followed a 20-6 non league loss to Rogers and 41-0 over No Providence and 19-0 over South Kingstown. Next week Colt travels to Kingston to face Kingstown.
The American Legion posts nationwide begin October membership drives and Kearney Post aims to exceed last year’s 187 members. The drive is aided by committee members including am 1 Baker, Albert A. Edmonds, Robert B. Suzman, Manuel P. Goulart, James A. Sisson, Charles E. Burns, America J. Vona, Domenic J. Mascola, Nicholas Gaglio, and John Francis 3rd. All 1952 members are urged to renew for 1953, and any World War or Korean War veteran is invited to join the Legion.
The Bristol Branch of the International Sunshine Society holds its semi annual convention Thursday at the White Rail Riding Club on Metacom Avenue. The event opens with a 10 30 a m business session led by state president Mrs Herbert Adams followed by lunch at 12 30 and an afternoon program from 1 45 led by Bristol branch president Mrs Salvatore Massano. Speakers include Iris W Booth and Mrs Fred H Barrows detailing handicapped work via Community Workshops of Rhode Island Inc with demonstrations of sewing and crafts. Committees cover arrangements reservations luncheon and program.
Five of Bristol's six general assembly hopefuls avoid positions on the home rule charter with incumbents Coggeshall Alfred and Brightman undecided. Republican challengers Cardoza Vermette also defer, while Perroni backs the charter as treasurer of the drafting commission. Both town committees reportedly weigh endorsements.
The Bristol Community Concert Association launches its 1952 53 membership drive with a fall start instead of spring. Mrs. Raymond Makowsky leads as president, appointing Mrs. Joseph Jolley Vernon A Gray and Mrs. Ralph J Petrucci as workers for Bristol and Warren. A kickoff dinner is planned for October 27 with campaigns across Bristol County.
