Bristol Bay Storm of September 1815 Levels Harbor
The Bristol wharves and warehouses were wrecked by a brutal gale on September 15 1815. The post office and Jacob Babitt’s brick storerooms suffered heavy losses with thousands in damage. Vessels broke from their moorings, several ships were driven ashore, and many sailors perished or were saved only by close calls. The town recovered quickly, repairing docks and resuming trade within a year.
