Dr. Anthony Ramos, Bristol school dentist, plans a townwide survey of children's teeth before fluoridation. He will study five and six year olds as a control group, repeating the survey each year for six years to chart dental improvement and may coordinate with nearby towns.
The Bristol Boy Scout Bugle and Drum Corps won four first prizes at the Rhode Island Association meet in Somerset Massachusetts including junior class, junior appearance, junior concert and junior male drum major Norman Toste. After the event they performed at a Bristol Colts game and will compete in Newburgh New York for the Northeastern States Association championship. Postcontest plans include renaming the corps while keeping a Bristol Boy Scout Band identity. Scoutmaster George R Fish notes the First Bristol Troop can reassemble as needed. Women’s Auxiliary and Drum Corps Committee meet next week.
King Philip Little League President Roger W. Pigeon asks officials coaches and players to follow storage maintenance steps for equipment. Clean dirty gloves with saddle soap dry wet gloves promptly but avoid heat condition them with vaseline if very dry and store with a ball in the pocket. Protect gloves from mold store in a cool dry place and cover with paper or cloth. Wipe bats with an oily cloth and store balls in a cool dry space.
Collins and Aikman Corp. announces a 12 cent per hour cost of living raise for Bristol and West Barrington plant workers. Frederic A. Cornell says 9 cents retroactive to March 19 and 2 cents retroactive to Sept. 3, with an escalator clause ensuring future adjustments. Downward changes cannot reduce wages below the Oct. 16, 1950 level.
Hope Circle No 70 Daughters of Isabella elected its officers led by state Past Regent Mrs Johanna McClure and Regent Mrs Loretta Connell. The group will install on November 19 and hold a rummage sale at Knights of Columbus Hall on November 1, voting a Red Feather donation.
The Bristol Parent-Teacher Association membership committee plans a general drive next week to recruit all parents of children at local schools. Co chairs Mrs. Joseph Sansone and Mrs. T. Thomas Balzano say mothers will visit neighbors to secure memberships.
Bristol Historical Society seeks permission to occupy the first floor of Rogers Free Library for one year awaiting the bank lease expiration in 1952. Industrial Trust Co will end its lease Sept 30 1952, with the library facing a $2000 annual income loss unless funds are found. The library board approved in principle the plan and will work out details while preserving exhibits from the Burnside Memorial Building.
The British Admiralty announced the submarine Affray and its entire crew of 75 are lost after vanishing. It followed a prearranged schedule and was last known to be in the English Channel near the Channel Islands off northwest France.
For 59 days forty ships of five nations mostly British searched 2000 square miles of sea bed at depths from 18 to 94 fathoms. The effort underscores the scale of the sea element long part of British history.
The vessels plied 23 000 miles across controlled seas as they searched for the Affray. Encounters with wrecks and rocks turned the finding of the needle in the haystack into a near impossible task and hope of locating the Affray faded as days passed without word of success.
