Bristol Tops Warren In War Bond Sales

Bristol led Warren in September War Bond sales with totals from the Bristol Post Office and Bristol Ind Trust reaching 42 975 00 while Warren branches reported 41 574 00 and nearby areas added about 6 500 00. The county quota rose to 115 000 from 96 150 based on statewide sales, with October established at the existing September figure.

Francis G McGovern Receives Army Second Lieutenant Commission

Francis G McGovern son of the Tax Assessor and Mrs Francis P McGovern of 626 Wood Street has earned a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U S Army. He completed the Officer Candidate Course at the Quartermaster School Camp Tec, Va, joining specially selected enlisted men who showed leadership and initiative for Quartermaster officers.

Scrap drive collects old keys for Axis fight

The Phoenix office reports strong participation in a scrap metal collection urging residents to bring old keys. Volunteers filled the Key-Kan Kontainer and started a larger box, calling more donations to aid the war effort.

Civilian Defense Board appoints Sullivan as head

James E. Sullivan principal of Guiteras Junior High School was named head of the Technical and Planning Division of the Bristol Civilian Defense Board. Ian M. Walker was named chairman of the Bristol Salvage Committee. Getchell resigned amid business pressures at Bristol Manufacturing. The board authorized air raid helmets and armbands purchases and set up casualty station upgrades.

Pins For Operators At Rhode Island Control Centers

The Rhode Island State Council of Defense voted to buy 5000 pins for Civil Defense volunteers who have not served as operators in 10 hours at any state control centers. It discussed preserving war activity records through Local Historical Societies and authorized Alfred H Fenton to coordinate an air raid demonstration with the U S Army chemical Warfare Service at Narragansett Race Track or Pawtucket Stadium on Sunday evening October 18.

Fourth Son Enlists in Navy From Local Family

Robert Dion of State street has enlisted in the U S Navy and will depart tomorrow for training. He is the fourth son of Mr and Mrs George Dion to enter the service, with brothers Edward G in the Amphibian Force at Norfolk and George E Jr in the Coast Guards at Martha's Vineyard, plus Sgt Earl T in the Army Air Corps at Spokane.
