In a Nov 3 1918 letter from Base Hospital No. 22 A. P. O. 705 A. E. F. Private Joseph M. Bottomley, formerly a linotype operator, describes being hit by a shell at close range, undergoing surgery, and writing from a hospital cot. He notes cheerful fellow soldiers, censored details, and hopes for an end to the war. His brother William A. Bottomley serves in the 112th Machine Gun Battalion. Bill was commended for bravery by Divisional Headquarters.
