The Rev. Charles R. Cooley warned at First Congregational Church that a nation obsessed with pleasure harms worship of God and slows the nation's gratitude. He spoke on Thanksgiving, urged a grateful heart, and used a Hamlet parody to critique chronic complaining and self pity.
High winds and heavy rain caused a dramatic collision as a New England Transportation bus struck a fire truck from Defiance Fire Company near Chestnut and Hope. Three people were injured, a chimney toppled, branches fell, and cellars flooded. Driver names are given with addresses for the bus and truck crews.
At a First Baptist Church meeting in this town plans were made for a Ham and Bean Supper on Tuesday December 2 in the church vestry. Mrs Henry Luther chairs the arrangements with Mr and Mrs Bertram F Bullock Jr Miss Hortense Burdon and Mr and Mrs Robert Powell assisting. An auction sale of food followed the business session with Bertram F Bullock Jr as auctioneer. Proceeds will support the church organ fund after storm damage.
Heavy rain disrupted Bristol Historical Society at Holmes House as speaker Mrs. Floyd Chaffee missed her talk on Historical Fans. Attendees shared fans. Agnes Herreshoff presented a life of Nathaniel G. Herreshoff. Henry Keck discussed Warren history and his forthcoming book. Officers to be elected January 26.
The Rev Granville G Bennett bishop of the Episcopal diocese will deliver his thirteenth annual Thanksgiving Day message to the Bristol Rotary Club at noon tomorrow. Rotary president Frank J Sylvia announced a January fundraising entertainment headed by Edward J Fitzgerald with Vernon A Gray William D Hall William M O Rourke Paul C Millemaggi Norman J Vermette and Stephen W Hopkins as committee members.
Frank B. Messinger of Worcester Massachusetts who served as auditor at Carr Manufacturing Corporation in Bristol since its inception died Friday after a long illness. His funeral was held yesterday at 3 p.m. at St Luke's Church Worcester attended by Mr and Mrs Arthur H Eastman and Mrs Athur H Carr of this town.
Bristol Townies cap a flawless home record with a 27-0 win over Town 400 at Guiteras Field. Hector Massa spearheaded the attack with Cirillo Freitas and McHugh scoring while McCaw added a late rushing TD. Next week the Townies face Riverside Crescents in East Providence to close the 1947 football festivities.
A special council meeting will examine 34 liquor license renewal applications and hear a report on rumors about alleged strip-tease shows at local dine and dance venues. Chief of Police Anthony J. Ferrara and Lt. Al visited the venues last week to investigate.
Consideration is given to expand the Foundati so that single shoes and mismated pairs can be offered to all cripples. Ordinarily such people must buy two pairs to get one. He emphasizes spreading practical Christianity in business and daily life.
The Christian Science Monitor recounts how a teacher, Catherine Pegg Lewitsky, introduced Prince Philip to the class at McJannet Country Day in St. Cloud, France. She later notes his wartime treatment as a British subject and his return to Arlington, Massachusetts.
Mr McJannet recalls Philip as rugged yet polite in 1927 near Paris. The boy’s mother was Princess Alice and his father the King of Greece in exile. He was a lively, tousled child with a fond welcome from the Princess.
A student recounts growing friendship with Philip of Greece through school life. Philip assists at the desk, cares for plants, and dreams of a raincoat and bicycle funded by the King of Sweden. He bonds over games, football, and a prized gift from England while navigating refugee hardships.
The Singletons Club held a well attended bridge party Wednesday at St Michael’s Parish House. Door prize went to Mrs Henry A Hambrick and winners included Mrs J William Wood Mrs Donald W Mathewson Mrs Max L Seiffert Mrs Herman F Gablinske Miss Marion L Darling Miss Ruth Graham Miss Janet MacDoughall Mrs Wesley A Armstrong Mrs Earl G Sturdevant Mrs John H Tuplin Mrs Arthur H Carr Mrs Arthur Eastman Mrs Daniel K Davis and Mrs William DeLong Hall. Coffee and cake were served by club members with committee members named Natalie Herreshoff Anna Kebrek Mildred Dixon Gladys Brightman Lavina Fales Janice Carr Clara Herreshoff John Hambrick Kenneth Sturdevant and Paul Washburn.
