Thanksgiving was celebrated at the Rhoads Island Veterans Home and Hospital for Aged Women with a Mass at 9 am and a turkey dinner for residents. The cohort at the Bristol and Benjamin Church Homes enjoyed turkey, candy, and fruit, with efforts from community groups and church members. Local churches held special services, and families contributed treats for residents.
Sixty five maple trees will be planted at Veterans Memorial Park to honor servicemen from World War II and the Korean Campaign. Councilman Joseph E Goulart announced the plan, with Joseph Kander as tree warden in charge. Trees will line the park’s four sides, following a plan from the Veterans Council dating back to the 1940s. Arrangements are led by Goulart, Sylvia, and Albert P Ruse.
Murgo, a former Colt High and Brown University athlete, is poised for a Class AA contract with the San Antonio team in the Texas League. Recently discharged from the Army after two years, he played for US Army baseball teams and previously starred in the Appalachian League with Wytheville, batting .250 with notable power and speed as a rookie.
Brown University notified Rhode Island real estate brokers that 47 acres at Mount Hope near Bristol may be sold as a unit to a developer for housing. The site, mostly woodland with fields, lies within the Haffenreffer Grant and will require town planning board approval and adherence to Bristol ordinances and university review of house plans.
Town Sergeant William T Cushin withdrew his resignation this morning at 9 am and informed Council President Joseph A Margo in writing that he will stand for reappointment. Cushin has held the post 17 years and will continue duties including attending meetings, serving court notices, and posting notices for the town.
Colt finished the season with a 14-0 Thanksgiving Day win against Barrington at Guiteras Field. Led by Nick Nastri and Anthony DaPonte, Colt dominated with strong rushing and multiple first downs, while Barrington struggled to score. Nastri rushed for 104 yards, DaPonte added 58, and fullback Red Smith kicked the extra point as Colt claimed fifth place with a 3-2-3 record.
After a public hearing with no opposition, State Director John L. Rego announced shellfish dredging will be allowed in the East Pass area south of Hog Island starting December 1. The zone has been closed to power dredging since World War II, with prior violations prompting enforcement. Operators are warned to avoid the Portsmouth Prudence Island cable area and pollution lines along the Portsmouth shore. About 9,800 bushels of quahogs have been transplanted near Arnold's Point from the polluted Providence River to boost the local crop.
Montreal Alouettes with Pat Abpruzzi at half back prepare to face the Edmonton Eskimos in Toronto for the Canadian professional football title. Montreal is favored 7 to 5 after winning the Big Four title while Edmonton claimed the Western Interprovincial title. The rivals split titles recently with Edmonton winning 26-25 in Toronto in 1954 and conquering 34-19 in Vancouver last year.
The Women's Guild of St Mary's Church completed plans for their bridge project at a monthly meeting. The event will take place Tuesday night under co chairs Mrs Felix Scott and Mrs Loretta Checko. The guilds annual Christmas party is set for Sunday Dec 16 with guest speaker Mrs Earle Cabral who demonstrated Christmas decl arations. Refreshments were provided by Mrs Joseph Polak Mrs Howard O'Brien and Mrs August Gibbe meyer.
