Memorial Day Observed in Bristol with Parade and Ceremonies
On May 30 1868 Memorial Day was first observed after General Logan set the date to honor fallen comrades. Bristol posts organized a long parade from High Street to the town hall and cemeteries with Band New England flags drums clergy and schoolchildren. Adults and students attended prayers an oration by Ellery W Green and graves at Wood Street Bradford and North Cemetery were decorated for thirty fallen comrades. The event closed with bell tolls and a solemn procession praised as one of the town’s most solemn occasions.

National Guard Officer Named Fourth of July Chief Marshal
Lt. Col. Everett E. McMillan of the Rhode Island National Guard commanding officer of the 243rd AAA Group will be Chief Marshal of the Fourth of July parade. Co chairs Miser and Dilello announced McMillan a 27 year veteran with WWII service including India Burma. A former Warren resident born 1903 in Fall River he lived at 37 Coomer Ave. He joined Battery C Bristol in 1929 and earned the Bronze Star in India. He has worked at the Providence Post Office since 1946.

Contract Awarded For State Street Widening Project
Campanella and Cardi Construction Co. of Hillsgrove won the State Street widening contract with a bid of 8 265 while the next bid from Francis Brothers was 11 500. A performance bond of 11 500 and a 500 certified check accompanied the bid. The council discussed start timing with highway surveyor Reynolds G. Northup who said work would likely begin in 10 days. J Baccala and Sons had originally been awarded the contract but withdrew their April 9 bid. Other bids included Marshall Landscaping Co. at 10 260 and J W Cardi Construction Co Cranston at 23 502. The Army Corps of Engineers offered 7 700 for 5 3 acres north of Asylum Road to serve as an Army reserve training center, land owned by the town under North Burial Ground. Council President Bruno asked for private appraisal figures from two competent appraisers.

The King Philip Little League begins its 1956 season tomorrow with a Memorial Day doubleheader. Ceremonies at 1 45 p.m precede 2 p.m and 4 p.m games featuring the Bobbins vs Gourmets and the Chips vs Plumbers. Town officials will participate at the plate.

The Bristol Town Council moved on five Chamber of Commerce proposals to boost tourism during Race Week and the Rhode Island Hi Neighbor Open Salt Water Fishing Derby. Bray Calls Further Town Hall Discussion On Town Buildings
