Memorial Day activities begin at 7 30 a m with National Guardsmen and veterans. In case of rain services shift to Kearney Post Home at 11 a m while Juniper Hill and St Marys Cemeteries hold brief exercises. The parade marches to North Burial Ground then Burnside Memorial for main exercises led by Col. John E Baird and Russell S Bray.
J Pierce Anthony, organist and choir director at St Michael's Episcopal Church, presented his voice and piano pupils in a Sunday recital at the parish house. Guest sopranos Gloria Gargani and Doris Rounds performed two songs. The program included Richard Clay, Marie Tobey, Elliotte Lamson, Ann Tobey, Clara De Wolf Herreshoff, Joseph Windle III, Eleanor Lamson, Mervyn Edward Clay, Walter Young, Carolyn Canning, Theo St Michaelettes and Fred Rounds with the St Michaelettes ensemble directed by Clay and others.
James Sylvia elected president of the CIO Union local at United States Rubber plant with Frank Sousa as vice president and Thomas Venduoli as secretary Edward S Pontes chosen treasurer and an executive board named including Joseph Sousa Abel Botelho Joseph Pereira William Nenna Domenic DeLuca Joseph Aguiar and Arthur Sylvia Herman Almeida named to the board of trustees and Ralph Quito as sentinel
A. A. Pansa named supervisor of boys for the summer playgrounds by the YMCA Recreation Board. Andrew Bozzario also applied for the post left by Vincent J Santo. The board approved a $700 bid from Holmes Brothers for a 1 inch thick bituminous outdoor basketball court and accepted Gregg Construction's bid of $800.40. Frank Moody urged lifeguard-supervised beaches for swimmer safety, and Frank O. Rene won a $120 contract to build basketball backboards. Next board meeting set for June 16.
About 150 children joined the May procession for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Sunday. Seventy first communicants led the march from the parish hall to High Street and State Street then to the church where a crowning ceremony and Rosary were held. May Ligeiro, Mary Madeline Pine, and Mary Ann Mancierli assisted with the crowning as Rev Emidio Di Mattia delivered the sermon.
Lt Gov John S McKiernan attended the fourth annual Cotton Ball at the Midway Steak and Lobster House. Emma Mello won best cotton gown. Ida Carreiro led the grand march. Attendees included Brig Gen James A Murphy and Sheila Murphy, Paul A Herzig and wife, Manuel Alves DeCarvalho, John Rocha and Mrs Rocha, Henry Miranda, and local officials.
In their season opener, the Bristol Boy Scout Bugle and Drum Corps, Rhode Island junior champions, captured seven prizes at the Stelio Pappas Memorial Drum Corps Competition at Cranston Street Armory Providence. They won four first and two second prizes across junior and open classes, competing against 30 or more corps from New York Massachusetts Connecticut and Rhode Island. The corps earned top honors in playing best appearing corps drum major Norman Toste and bugling by Frank Perry. They also won second in individual drumming and ancient bass drumming. The group also won first in the concert class with Southland a medley of southern tunes. George Amaral played taps and Vincent DeFelice echoed in the memorial service for Stelio Pappas. The audience cheered for an encore but the rules allowed only one concert number.

John Bryan, 45, of Wilmington, piloting a Culver V two seater from New Haven to Newport, suffered head injuries and a badly damaged aircraft after a motor failure forced a crash landing on a lot south of Mount Hope Farms on Metacom Avenue at 4 35 p m Monday. Police report he had been grounded at New Haven Sunday due to bad weather and was transported to Newport Hospital after first aid.
