Bristol to assign SUR workers to aid Fourth of July celebration

Bristol SUR administrator Orlando J. Bisbano proposed a small crew from SUR to assist the Fourth of July celebration committee with general repairs before and after the observance. Work to beautify Bristol Common begins with 24 men laying a new 750 foot six foot wide sidewalk section at $800, with more crews to follow for grass cutting and ongoing beautification through late July or early August. Funds exceed $5500 with Town Council approval pending final sanction.

Bristol names Fred Guevremont new fire chief in testimonial honor

Bristol celebrates Fred Guevremont as the new fire chief with a testimonial dinner at Thames Street station. Ever Ready Engine and Hose Company, organized in 1924 by Guevremont and sewer commissioner Donat J Gladue, hosts with Henry W Peterson as toastmaster and a roster of local officials attending.

Correia and Shulman Named Valleyc totorian and Salutatorian

Frank Correia and Maynard Shulman were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Providence Class of 1939 by Principal Edward J Fitzgerald. Correia held a 94.30 average over three years, Shulman 93.46, from about 80 students. Commencement is June 22 at Andrews Memorial High School auditorium with Dr James I Hanley as speaker.

Joint Service At Whitsunday At St Michaels Church

St Michael's Episcopal Church marks Whitsunday with a joint 11 o'clock service for church school members and parishioners. Canon Parshley will deliver the sermon as choirs participate. A pre service music program features Ruth Moulton, Harriet Kinder Iacoletti, and Walter Angell. The school bus runs its usual route from 10 30 am.

Medal to honor outstanding St Mary's parochial pupil

For the first time, St Mary’s parochial school will award a medal to its outstanding boy. Bristol Council Knights of Columbus will present it, selecting the recipient with Deputy Grand Knight John Burke and Augustine Bonerone. Seventeen year old Bristol High School junior Frederick Coggeshall will represent the Council at the Little Rhody Boys State in Kingston next month.

Elm plantings advance in Bristol Garden Club drive

Bristol Garden Club planting 85 elms under Tree Warden Joseph C Kinder to replace trees lost in the September hurricane. Site choices cover Valley to Washington streets and Hope to High, with donors of 250 dollars able to request a tree in front of their property. Funds total about 198.25 with a 250 dollar check from Miss Florence T Nelson. more contributions will fund continued planting.

Kearney Unit Opens Poppy Sale for Veterans Benefit

The Kearney Post auxiliary unit of about twenty women began a two day Poppy Day sale in Bristol assisted by regional members. Mrs Walter Carr chairs the committee and urged the town to honor the dead and aid disabled World War veterans with the proceeds.

Entertainers Offer Services For Italian Socialites Dinner

Entertainers Pearl Dion vocalist and Tullo Gasperini accordionist with WJAR Matinee Orchestra will perform at the Italian Socialites Women’s Club charity dinner June 5 at Bristol Casino.
