Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate A Grand Southern Marvel
A visitor describes the vast Biltmore estate in Asheville led by Mr. Vanderbilt. The $3,000,000 marble mansion, designed by Richard M. Hant in French Renaissance style, sits amid 100,000 acres connected by 40 miles of macadam roads. Frederick Law Olmstead shaped the grounds, and the town of Biltmore is a model community with electric lights, uniform architecture, and public access on visiting days. The Vanderbilt family maintains extensive operations, farms, and a large staff, with Miss Alice Roosevelt visiting the Mount Pisgah lodge nearby.

Foolish ads teach a cautionary tale about swindlers
A man lured by cheap story papers tried scams from ads offering cures for drinking, how to raise turnips, impress a girl, double money, and more. Each response gave a ridiculous instruction or a bloated promise. He learns to beware, as most schemes exploit gullibility and sell only junk.
