Operations Naval Reserve meeting shows early success

Bristol progresses toward a 100 enlistment goal for the Civilian Naval Reserve with about 40 signed up. Rear Admiral Gilbert C. Hoover notes encouraging results in Bristol and Warren as enrollment cards are distributed at a YMCA recruiting office.

Congregational Women Plan Barrington Spring Meeting

The Congregational Women of Rhode Island meet at White Church Barrington on Thursday May 22 at 10 30 a m. Mrs Charles F Towne presides. Rev Thomas K Thompson National Secretary of Christian Stewardship speaks on Stewardship in the Life of Women. Mrs Chester B Fisk speaks on Spiritual Training Now. Officers to be elected and committee reports given. Attendees bring gifts for Ellis Island. Coffee and dessert served at noon.

Property Owners Press Dump Care Plan with Town Leaders

Mount Hope Farms owner Rudolph F Haffenreffer and other local property owners met with Town Council President Rear Admiral Gilbert Hoover and Town Solicitor Lucien Capone to discuss future management of the Minturn Farm dump. Admiral Hoover to report on the conference at the council meeting. Bristol Zoning Board of Review held a public hearing and granted a special exception to permit the town dump on Minturn Farm with no objections raised.

Testimonial Planned for Rhode Island Drum Corps Leader

A testimonial banquet on June 23 at Kearney Post Home will honor William F. Head as president of the Rhode Island Fife Drum and Bugle Corps Association. The event opens the drum corps season and aims to fund travel to the national competition at the American Legion convention in New York.

Town Granted Minturn Farm Dump Use

The Zoning Board of Review granted the Town Council an exception to allow a dump on Minturn Farm along Metacom Avenue with no opposition. A road into the farm nears completion and the dump will start June 1, abandoning the World Street dump per last year’s special town meeting.

Rector calls for junior college in Rhode Island

Rev. Anthony R Parshley urged a commission to study creating a Bristol Rhode Island junior college with Episcopal Diocesan sponsorship. He argued shutting 1500 students from education burdens state social conscience and urged public support for an accredited independent program.

Matrone Heads Rhode Island Eagles at Bristol Convention

Louis Matrone of Bristol Aerie was elected president of Rhode Island Aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, at the 24th annual convention in Bristol. Other officers named include Leon Mathieu as vice president and John Dessant as chaplain, with attendance by state officials and regional dignitaries at a Colonial Hotel gathering and Lobster Clan banquet.
