Talking dog Mr Lucky speaks 20 words in Hollywood history

In Midvale Utah a Boston Terrier named Mr Lucky reportedly spoke human words, thrilling owner Mrs Davis and reporter Hendrick. The dog now in Hollywood has a 20 word vocabulary and performs on cue for a film project by John Shelton.

Teixeira and Calandra Named Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Miss Mary Louise Teixeira of 51 Constitution Street named valedictorian for the Bristol Senior High School Class of 1953. Edward Paul Calandra of 1073 Hope Street chosen as salutatorian and captain of the Colt basketball team. U S Senator John O Pastore will speak at graduation on June 18 at the Andrews School auditorium.

Lions Club to Enter Float in July Parade

The Bristol Lions Club announced it will enter a float in the Fourth of July parade. Ralph McCaw, the fourth committee chairman, said more entries are expected on historic and patriotic themes. The club will also donate a bicycle as a prize for the annual p-Box derby the day before.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Mothers Club Elects Officers

Mrs. Joseph Vorro won another term as club president at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Mothers Club annual meeting in the school auditorium. The slate of officers was renamed with her, including Mrs. Paul Castigliego as vice president and Mrs. Domenic V. A. Capone as treasurer. The group planned a communion breakfast for 72 parish children receiving First Holy Communion, with a committee led by Mrs. Joseph Teixeira and others. The next meeting is set for June 14.

Public X-Ray Drive Surpasses 4700 Bristolians Photographed

The Community X-Ray Clinic reports over 4700 Bristolians X-rayed this visit as the public phase continues at multiple Bristol sites. The mobile unit will move to Andrews School for the week with hours 11 am to 7 pm on Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on other days.

Riot Erupts After Scout Corps Exhibit Victory

In June 1940 Bristol County District Boy Scouts held a circus at Guiteras Athletic Field featuring the Bugle and Drum Corps Static Championship. Six corps competed including Pawtucket Valley Newport Slatersville Warren Providence and Bristol. Bristol Scout Corps won as Warren placed second amid claims judges were biased by Bristol officials, sparking a near riot.

Four Bristol Y Men Earn State Meet Berths

Four Bristol Y M en attended the state meet at Providence earning spots to advance to the next round in Haverhill Massachusetts. Ronald Formisano took first in the eight pound shot put for 13 and 14 year olds while Kenneth Murray was third in the high jump for 11 and 12 year olds. Leon Lemaitre placed third in the softball throw for nine and 10 year olds and Joseph Cortellessa tied for second in the running broad jump for nine and 10 year olds. Greenwich won the meet with Bristol finishing seventh.

Bristol to Honor Lt. Edward L. Leahy Jr at Memorial Day

A granite war dead monument will be unveiled in Bristol’s Legion Square with Lt. Edward L. Leahy Jr. named on a bronze plaque. The naval officer earned high praise from superiors for duty before dying aboard the submarine USS Herring, which vanished after a Japan coast mission in June 1944. Forrestal’s letter to Leahy’s parents recounts the last days and the missing vessel.

St Marys Catholic Charities Appeal Yields 5351

The St Marys Church Charities Appeal finished with a recorded total of 5351 raised, beating last years 4600. Frederick T Goff chaired, Mrs George Baldwin was secretary, and Rev Clyde J Walsh acted as treasurer. Donations continue to be accepted though the drive is officially closed.

St Marys Welcomes New Pastor Rev Lynch

The Rev Lynch arrives as St Marys parish priest succeeding Bishop McVinney. Born December 15, 1903 in Woonsocket, he studied at LaSalle Academy and St Charles College, earned M A and Ph D degrees, and served at St Josephs Ashton and St Thomas Manton. He has taught at La Salle Academy and Elena Academy and was rector at the seminary before his appointment.
