July 4th Committee Faces Financial Hurdles In Town

A Friday meeting at 7 30 p m in the Town Council Chamber will chart plans for Fourth of July observances with a goal of raising 2500 dollars or more. Eleanor Perry Wins First Prize in I Am an American Essay

Eleanor Perry, daughter of Mr and Mrs Calbraith B Perry, won $25 first prize in the Bristol Business Civic Association essay contest for I Am an American Day. Ann L Foti took second with $10 in stamps and Irene M Hardie third with $5 in stamps.

St Mary’s Carnival Benefit Opens in Bristol Week of May 24

Cancer Control Fund receives one dollar from California. St Mary’s Church hosts a benefit carnival produced by Playhouse Shows of Manchester and Quincy. The event, featuring Capt Duncan Fairlie the Human Torch, runs all week to raise funds for cancer control with local officials coordinating the executive committee.

Local Boy Aboard Rescue Ship Kearsage

Four seamen aboard the merchant ship SS Empire Consequence were badly burned when a boiler exploded. Rescue planes spotted the stricken vessel about 120 miles away. The carrier USS Kearsage dispatched the destroyer USS Dyess to reach and transfer the injured to the Kearsage sick bay.

Y M C A Day Camp Plan Approved

The Y board approved a four week summer day camp for boys ages 7 to 11 led by Artie Pansa with two assistants. Camp runs Mon Wed Fri with bus transportation from the Y. Locations along Mount Hope Bay are under consideration. Activities include swimming instruction and supervised athletics. Fee is 350 per week. about 20 boys expected from Saturday classes. A meeting for softball league reps and governors is set for Thursday after the twilight game. The Coconuts lead the Nut League 5 1 and Fire tops Cracker League at 5 0.

Salvation Army Campaign Opens in Bristol

Robert W. Nelson chairs the annual Salvation Army fund drive with J William Wood as treasurer. Letters commenced the appeal to Bristol supporters detailing community services including the Service Fund that last year provided groceries clothing and dental care to residents in need. The goal is $750 and donations go to Treasurer Wood as house solicitation is not planned.

School Calendar Adopted for 1948 49 Year

The May meeting sets a 183 day 1948 49 school year calendar with a 180 day minimum by law. Fall term starts Sept 8 and summer recess ends June 24, with graduation on June 23. The schedule includes marking periods holidays and observances such as Columbus Day Armistice Day Thanksgiving Christmas and Lincoln’s Birthday and RI Independence Day.

Naval Reserve Unit May Be Formed Here
