Town Council Supports Fourth of July Parade and Local Improvements

The semi monthly council meeting endorsed a community Fourth of July celebration with voluntary parade participation and no town expense. They approved sidewalk work on Union street, a church move and future erection, a parade permit for the Divine Holy Ghost Association, a merry go round on the common, and a 25 cent daily police pay raise consideration, plus nuisance abatement and land leases with bonds as conditions.

War Army Bill Passed by House and Senate

The war army bill received House approval Wednesday without a recorded vote and cleared the Senate yesterday by 65 to 8. It authorizes selective conscription for 2 increments of 500,000 men ages 21 to 30 and permits raising volunteer forces, with increased pay for enlisted men. The President is expected to sign into law today.

Bristol Red Cross War Fund Appeal Summary

Bristol citizens urged to donate to the Red Cross Auxiliary with rising costs. The Bristol Mothers’ Club reported owed funds, with totals previously acknowledged at 107 dollars and 50 cents. Bristol Men Sign 53 Enlistment Rolls at Coast Artillery Rally

A mass meeting at the Pastime Theatre in Bristol drew large crowds as 53 young men ages 18 to 35 signed rolls for the 19th Company Rhode Island Coast Artillery Corps. Speakers included Col. M A Cheesman Col Charles F Tillinghast and Rear Admiral John R Edwards. A parade featuring the Herreshoff Band and local groups preceded the event with uniformed Dreadnaught Hook Ladder and Hose Company signing the rolls.

Bowlers Triumph as Odd Fellows Top Masons in YMCA Match

The YMCA bowling night saw the Odd Fellows defeat the Masons by two strings. Harvey led with 102 107 100 for 309 in three strings while Dimond added 118 for 303. Bottomley contributed 116 for 299, totaling 1424 for the Odd Fellows against the Masons 1336.

Nineteenth Co Assured Mustering After Exams

Forty five of fifty three enlistees signed for the Nineteenth Coast Artillery Corps were examined by Dr Marchant and Dr Merriman. Twenty five passed, bringing total qualifiers to seventy and ensuring mustering in as a unit, with thirty eight more needed. Medical examinations continued at the Bristol Armory with about a dozen expected to be examined.

Military Census Delayed By Draft Registration Dates

The military census work by women volunteers is postponed until after the male registration begins. Registration cannot start until 10 days after the Army Bill for the selective draft is enacted and signed by the President.

Aliens Registration Nears Final Day At Court House

The total aliens registered at the Court House reached 4137 by last night and with tomorrow's last day and a half holiday a rush is expected to avoid fines or imprisonment. An estimated total near 5000 is anticipated.
