Town President J Floyd Huestis opposed publishing a proposal by Councilman John P Marshall to raise salaries by 100 annually. Marshall argued costs of serving the council justify a raise, while others urged taxpayer only action via town meeting.
The St Rita's Society observes Mothers Day with a Sunday afternoon party in the Parish Hall on Congregational Street at 3 oclock. Josephine Russo chairs the arrangements assisted by Mary Florenzano co chair Lucy Murgo Philippa Pirri and Anna Panzarella. The hall will be decorated and there will be entertainment and refreshments.
Boston born saxophonist Helen Huxtable known as Huckey leads the Don Raymond all girl orchestra at the New Bristol Casino. She swam from violin to sax and clarinet, spent years with vaudeville and Swing acts, survived a river rampage on stage, and recalls travels from Boston to Kansas City and West Virginia with a fondness for Bristol and South Carolina.
Bristol Police Chief Anthony Ferrara said there is no link between a Portsmouth Police souvenir program fundraiser and Bristol. He noted local solicitors contacted businesses asking to contribute to the Portsmouth program, then sent receipted bills, initially causing concern before authenticity was confirmed.
Reservations are being taken daily for the First Annual Ball of the Bristol Fire Department at the New Bristol Casino on Friday May 17. Governor William H Vanderbilt will head the invited guests along with fire chiefs from Providence East Providence Fall River Newbury Barrington Warren and Bristol. Proceeds support four local fire companies and dancing runs from 9 p m to 1 a m with a floor show and novelties. Tickets available at Pure Food Store Hope Street or Bristol 163.
State Registrar of Motor Vehicles George R Beane will be principal speaker at the Bristol County Parent-Teacher Association annual meeting in the Colt Memorial high school auditorium Monday night. Officers for the ensuing year will be elected as this final session. Mrs Lu c ien Capone will preside. A hospitality committee of the three Bristol groups arranges entertainment. The meeting is open to the public. Group singing is led by Mrs Farl G Stur devant.
Colt Memorial high school seeks a win over Burrillville at 3 p.m. on Guiteras Field after an 8-6 loss to Warren. Large crowd expected as Warren beat Colt with Correia family members contributing. Wink hit three of nine Warren hits, Jim caught, Sam added two hits and a run.
Joseph A Hammill Bristol Town Solicitor and Justice of the Peace for a decade died at 9 15 this morning at 110 Church Street after a long illness He was born in town a son of Patrick and Mary Hammill and brother of the late Judge Frank H Hammill A Michigan Law School graduate 1912 he practiced with his brother Frank in Bristol and Providence He was appointed Town Solicitor in 1931 and served until 1933 and again from 1935 until his death Surviving are his wife Margaret two sisters Anna J Hammill and Mrs Thomas J Connery and two brothers James C and William P Hammill Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Fifteen members of the Junior Forum from Colt Memorial High School with advisor Miss Anne Sisson presented a Rotary Club program at the YMCA meeting. They discussed Clarence Streit’s Union Now plan with remarks by Miss Nancy Bosworth and by William Cashin Jr and Josephine Kerr. The group led a general discussion, stressing youth input.
At a Bristol event the committee arranging the annual ball announced ticket sales for the June 28 at the New Bristol Casino. General chair Edward E. Levy named Laura Balzano and Anthony Tasiello to run ticket sales with reservations by Genevieve Pagnatlo and Joseph Gallagher. Poster committee includes Marie Schiniger Bertha Roderick and Emily Xavier. A group meeting is set for May 27.
The Bristol Italo-American Democratic Club registration committee will meet tonight at the club headquarters on Wood Street. The Portuguese registration group will meet in the same hall next Tuesday night. June 23 has been set for the outing and clambake at a Woodlawn Avenue site conducted by the Italo-American Club.
The Phoenix will publish the first instalment starting May 14 of an historical sketch on Bristol Public Schools from 1680 to 1875. The copy, by Ellen R. Luther, is possibly unique, and the report credits Robert S. Andrews for its early compilation.
