The Andrews Memorial high school cornerstone laying will take place on Flag Day June 14. Leo Cantwell chairs the organizing committee and will host the event with an address by distinguished Bristol native Mark A. DeWolf Howe.
The Colt Memorial high school gains a four year certificate extension to December 31, 1942 from the New England College Entrance Certificate Board. The board also reports rapid construction progress on the town’s new $200,000 school interior, with insurance increased to 10,000. Six principals and three supervisors are re appointed for 1938 39 with adjusted salaries and two Guiteras staff members attaining permanent status after probation.
Anthony J Nunes was elected president at the annual meeting in Wood Street. He succeeds Loui Matrou and will be installed June 13 along with new officers including Angelo Calandra Pasquale Mariano and Manuel Vargas Jr.
Rev Arthur W. Burdon of the First Baptist Church says the resignation of Frederick E. Alger as superintendent is in the church’s hands and will be acted on under church rules. He notes the church rejects any philosophy not aligned with Christian teaching and that Alger’s speech does not reflect the church or its members. He emphasizes Christian Americanism as the church’s guiding belief and distances himself as a citizen from Alger’s views.
A healthy crowd attends the first twilight organized ball game signaling strong local interest. Seating is ample but disturbances by noisy youths and some mischief by grown men provoke complaints from volunteers and committee members.
The Mt Carmel group staged a Mother’s Day tableau of the Blessed Mother by the Children of Mary at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church on Congregational Street. Miss Bridget Nastri and Miss Geraldine Marino supervised the event which drew nearly 100 members and their mothers. Alma Marino and Nancy Ann Ferrara performed piano pieces as refreshments were arranged by the general arrangements committee led by Mary DuPont with Catherine Puya Martha DiMezza Olympia Proto Nellie Falco and Alma Marino ex officio.
The Bristol Train of Artillery plans a housewarming in the newly renovated armory on State Street Thursday evening May 19. Invitations have been issued for a social period followed by supper and a speaker program.
Postmaster Tamel W Coggeshall outlines handling of Bristol air mail cachet covers for Air Mail Week May 15 to 21. Local mail on May 15 will be canceled locally, while May 19 covers sent to Seekonk then Hillsgrove airports will receive proper back stamps.
Plans announced for the 10th annual Feast of Ecco Homo on May 21-22 in Bristol honoring the Portuguese colony. Parades on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon lead to church services and band concerts by the Bristol Portuguese Independent Band Club. Rev Henrique Rocha will officiate at the church service, with Daniel M Vargas leading as president of the Colonial Santo Chris to Club and officers Manuel Soares and Seraphine Almeida among organizers.
Parishioners of St Elizabeth's church plan the silver jubilee in July with events on the church grounds a lawn party set for June 30 July 1 and 2 and a picnic August 14 at an as yet to be chosen site. The Bristol committee reports $405.91 raised to date in 1938 to combat cancer and notes about 100 new members joined. It praises re enlistees and donors, lists key supporters including Dr Herman C Pitts and Dr Alfred M Merriman, and plans lectures on cancer control for groups in the coming year.
Mount Hope Chapter Order of Eastern Star will hold a rummage sale Friday in the Levy Block Hope Street. Mrs Iona Young chairs the committee with Mrs Elizabeth Gladding Mrs Gladys McCaw Mrs Harry Munro and Mrs Jeane Marshall ex officio.
Alice Brown a 13 year old in Reynolds School 6A class divides time between schooling and her passion auto repair. She aids her father Frank Brown at 34 Roma street mastering batteries grease oil changes and bolt tightening.
In a small town garage Alice spots trouble and lines up parts for repairs. She operates the gasoline pump and ensures windshields are secured. When her father is away she runs the business, knowing the ropes so well Mr. Brown need not worry.
Her greatest interest lies in electrical auto equipment and she can explain ignition systems distributors generators and related parts. Her father expected she would grow out of it yet she kept visiting the garage and grew more skilled and valuable as a mechanical assistant.
In the story Alice shows mechanical skill and a feminine instinct for cleanliness. Mr Brown notes she keeps his office and garage floor spotless. She can wield a monkey wrench and talks auto parts with customers as if recipes. Her father smiles proudly at her growing sales role.
The girl Alice, aged thirteen, declares she will pursue automobile work and learn everything about cars. Her mother supports her goal, and locals note Bristol may soon have a genuine woman auto repairer, though she is still young.
