Sigf Schtellé and Oscar Lowandes will exhibit in this town on Saturday May 12. An advance agent was here yesterday and today making necessary arrangements for the event.
A west side Perry Road cottage owned by Town B was totally destroyed by fire discovered after dawn. Neighbors alerted by a smoke onlookers say the building, once used as a summer home for the estate of Patrick, burned nearly to the ground before arrival of an India Rubber Company engine and an auto truck. The fire’s cause is unknown and the structure was insured.
In anticipation of an unusually good business our spring and summer stock exceeds prior efforts with a wide display of leather and fabric styles designed to harmonize with every costume. Patrons who know us will find their expectations surpassed in this season’s display.
Governor Beerkman orders a statewide military census conducted by women under Rhode Island Branch National League for Women Service. The enumeration covers all residents and resources during the week of May 21, with oathbound enumerators wearing official badges. Raymond T. Pierce of Rehoboth died last February in Massachusetts. Native of Bristol, he was a son of Mason W. Pierce Jr and nephew of Mary C. Bowen. He leaves his widow Ellen A. Perry. formerly of Providence, with whom he lived nearly 50 years. Pierce was esteemed for his saintly character, long church involvement, and missionary spirit. He joined the Rehoboth Congregational Church after years with East Providence Methodists. His last illness showed his faith and generosity, leaving a lasting influence and the sentiment that living in hearts means not dying.
Charles B. Rockwell George Leighton and the naval secretary led a dinner and conference at the Turk's Head Club to form a state wide YMCA war council for soldiers at the front. Rhode Island is asked to raise 50000 as part of a 3 million fund to build camps and provide social education physical and religious welfare. Bristol plans to participate with a local committee and a mass meeting will be held soon to outline needs.
The Pastime Theatre presents The Waiting Soul starring Olga Petrova in a Metro Pictures production based on Marion Short's story. Aaron Hoffman supervises and Burton L. King directs. Also showing a Metro comedy, a Rhode Island Weekly travelogue, and a Triangle Keystone comedy.
A Bristol town conference of Congregational Churches announced for May 8 and 9 with delegates and out of town guests invited. Dr Atkins of Providence is slated to speak on the Hope of a Battle-tried World as Rhode Island awaits his valued services for the event not held here for 50 years.
Star Theatre showcases June Caprice in The Ragged Princess a five act feature Vernon Castle stars in War in the Dooryard and Patria latest chapter plus a comedy. Douglas Fairbanks appears in American Aristocracy a five act comedy drama Mollie King stars in The Hestery on the Double Cross Rhode Island Weekly notes Joe Belmont in The Love Comet two reels Monday features J Warren Kerrigan and Pearl White in a separate program.
State Board of Public Roads announces sealed bids for reconstruction of multiple sections including Mendon Road Cumberland Putnam Pike Smithfield Hartford Pike Johnston New London Turnpike Cranston Warwick Boston Neck Road North Providence Taunton Avenue East Providence Main Road Warren Bristol and more. Bids due May 5 1917 with certified check requirement and right to reject all bids. Bidders may inspect specifications at the State House Office.
