Lions to Seek Funds for Charity Service Program

Bristol Lions Club plans a series of social activities before summer to raise money for its community service program. Rainbow arrives in Bristol to be groomed for cup races

Rainbow owned by Harold S Van derbilt arrives at the Herreshoff plant from Bath Maine to be groomed for the defense trials in May. The Rainbow will race against Ranger and Weetamoe in eliminations with Yankee entered, while Tom Sopwith's Endeavour is former rival. On Armistice Day 1935 a stormy Southern Pacific scene unfolded as a distress call came from a vessel near the San Bernardino Straits Philippine Islands. The lifeboat attempted rescue near the wreck of the English freighter Silver Hazel but could not reach the crew. No lives were lost as all were forward in the wreck.

The life boat crew lost sight of their own craft amid massive waves as the Silver Hazel wrecked. Perry's captain sent a wireless message to Manila and two destroyers were dispatched. Raiders formed from loosened lumber rafts were launched and later picked up by whale boats from arriving Navy ships.

Life boat crew member recalls brutal Pacific voyage

Henry Perry recalls a severe storm at sea while his ship headed to Japan from Seattle. The voyage stretched to 35 days instead of 22 as a foot of ice formed on the vessel and wheel room windows, making navigation near impossible. Perry preserves the clippings and photos as proof of his service.
