Wayland Road entrance plan for Bay Side Shores discussed

Planning Board votes unanimously to recommend a new entrance linking Wayland Rd to Westwood Rd to serve Bay Side Shores. Condemnation may be needed for private 30 by 50 foot land. Tie-in to Greylock Rd could aid construction. Bristol Highlands Association cautions against connecting residential plats if alternatives exist.

Permission To Sell Seven Lots By Brown University

The Planning Board deferred action on Brown University's request to sell seven lots of its Haffenreffer grant property and scheduled a meeting with university officials on April 24. The plan allocates funds from the sale to beautify the area, with prior agreement that utilities must be installed before any building. The plat name changed from King Philip Farm to Pokanoket Farm, and the university asked to keep streets private, limit public water access, and prevent nonplatted areas from public use. Board Chairman Dr Russell S Bray said further talks with the Town Solicitor and Brown officials were needed.

Univ. Head urges high schools to raise standards

Dr Carl R. Woodward president of the Univ. of Rhode Island told the PTA that high schools must offer equal educational opportunities for all students, balance programs, emphasize science culture, elevate teaching quality, and require higher academic standing. He urged more Latin and math, fewer fringe courses, warned of tougher college entry, and urged parents to meet responsibilities while noting shortages of qualified teachers and rising enrollments. He cited Sputnik as a wakeup call and supported mixed specialized and general education in high schools.
