25 Years Ago in Bristol Budget Cuts and Union Drive
Public school teachers accepted about a three percent pay cut to aid the school committee in reshaping the budget after a nearly $10,000 town-tax cut. The Supreme Court denied Bristol’s appeal on a sewage disposal plan, affirming the state board’s authority. A proposed five taxpayer budget committee was discussed, and labor organizing efforts extended to five Bristol plants. A land-use committee was proposed by the Farm Bureau, and the first fishhawk sighting was noted. Taxpayers increased the tax rate to the legal limit of 2.50 and approved $487,713.70 with 23 appropriation propositions, only two rejected. U S Rubber announced an average 18 1/2 cent hourly wage rise for about 800 workers. The VFW post elected Chester W Williams as state division chief and commander of the State Soldiers' Home.
