Fred P Stradling, manager of Bristol County Water Company, was elected a Director of the New England Section of the American Water Works Association for three years at the Cambridge conference. Born in Muncie Indiana, he began in 1918 at Muncie Water Works and later led public water supply operations in Kokomo and East St. Louis before arriving in Bristol in 1946. He has served 28 years in the association, chaired its Indiana Section in 1933, and supervised major local water system improvements including the Barrington well field filtration plant pumping station and 25 miles of new mains along with a new metering program in Warren and Bristol.

Lame-Duck Council Appoints Sylvia to Zoning Board
In a last meeting of the two year term the lame duck Republican Town Council named John J. Sylvia to a five year vacancy on the Zoning Board of Review filling the seat left by Frederick T. Goff who withdrew from consideration for another term. The appointment followed a voice vote after approval from Town Solicitor Capone and drew comment from Democratic Chairman Anthony J. Nunes who called it small politics though legal. The session included farewell remarks and a gavellike presentation to Council President Paul A. Herzig while the council rescinded a December motion to charge Industrial Trust Company the cost of a surety bond tied to a lost sewer bond check.

Pay Hikes Sought in Bristol School Budget Proposal
The Bristol School Department requests 353 840 for the coming year with about 300 raises for teaching staff and 250 for non teachers. The plan, to be reviewed by the Budget Commission, shows a 35 266 increase over 1952 and notes Bristol well below state per pupil costs with 208.01 compared with a state average over 222.
