Battery Colors Honored by Citizens' Club in Bristol

Elks Parade Heralds New Bristol County Lodge Home

An estimated two to three thousand attended the Elks parade of nine lodges and seven bands before dedicating their new Bristol County Lodge home at Constitution Street. Speakers included Rhode Island Attorney General William E Powers who noted civil liberty concerns amid ideological wars and highlighted Powers as the first blind Elks member.

Teen-Age Band Set for Fourth of July Block Dance

Jimmy Casale and his busy bees, averaging 14 years old, will supply music for the Fourth of July block dance on High Street at Reynolds School. The eight-piece band, which played here last year, begins at 9 30 pm and plays to 11 30 pm free of charge. Crews of destroyers Perry and Johnston invited to participate.

Prudence Island Ferry Resumes Service After Break Down

The Prudence ferry ran aground the last trip Sunday night when the freshwater cooling pump failed, leaving the diesel overheated. State Police and Bristol officers organized a tow, aided by two local boys, and the craft returned to Church Street dock by 9:15 PM with all 75 passengers safe.

Two Speeders Fined Ten Dollars By District Court

In Bristol District Court Judge James B. Linehan found Joseph Pires and Lawrence J Caswell guilty of speeding and fined each ten dollars plus costs after they were arrested heading north on Hope street June 25 by Officer Anthony J. Carlone who suspected racing. The defendants pleaded guilty. another case of Peter Seyer for disorderly conduct was set for two weeks.

Water main cost dispute spurs council action

Bristol County Water Company and private bidders differ on an eight inch pipe project for Bayside Shores. Donovan contends total costs exceed 10 000 with bids from Brito Construction Braga and Germaine ranging around 7 395 to 7 446. A conference among the water authority chair Jerome Donon state utilities engineer and others is planned to resolve the discrepancy.

Nunes Seeks Appointee to Track Down Delinquent Taxpayers

Town tax collector Alfred N Nunes asked the council to authorize appointing a collector to pursue delinquent taxpayers with about 2800 dollars in back taxes. He proposed a 10 percent fee and said the work would be off duty. The council noted authority rests with the tax department but agreed to consider the plan after police and water issues were discussed.
