Chief Anthony J. Ferrara marks 24 years as police chief of the town. He recalls a long career starting in January 1925, rising from patrolman to night captain before being appointed chief in 1934, replacing Richard J. Cavanaugh. The chief notes June 24 began his 25th year in office.
The Bristol Fourth of July committee completes plans for the celebration with a soapbox derby Sunday June 23 at 6. The USS Rhodes destroyer will anchor July 3 at noon and visitors may tour the ship. Miss Fourth of July contest is at 5 pm Thursday at John Post Reynolds School. Also on Thursday an Old Timers baseball game on the Common, a buffet supper at the Newbold residence, an Atland concert on the Common, and a block dance on High Street. The first annual Fourth of July Ball is at Metacom Avenue Armory, 9 pm to 1 am. A bonfire will be lit at Wood Street near Veterans Park. On the Fourth, bells ring at 6 am, followed by a 2 pm bugle corps demonstration and a 5 pm greasy pole contest on the Common. The big parade led by Grand Marshal Joseph G. A. Riccio will feature 13 divisions with Vin as chief of staff.
Two well known local couples the Joseph Eckersleys and the T P Brightmans celebrated their golden wedding anniversaries Wednesday. Both were married in 1900 at local churches. The Eckersleys enjoyed an auto trip to Newton, while the Brightmans visited New London for the day. Mr Brightman long employed at Herreshoff Mfg Co and later at J F Huestis Co is a noted boating authority. Mr Eckersley, a 43 year New Haven Railroad veteran, credits walking for their long marriage. Their son Peter captains a six foot motorboat from Port Washington NY. A Little League game is planned at 5:60 on the Common.
Mrs. Barnes Newberry Jr announces contributions to the Rogers Free Library Building Fund. Gifts include $1,000 from Mrs. John S. Palmer 2nd in memory of her husband, $500 from another memorial donor, $25 from Mrs. J. B. DeWolf, $5 from Mr. and Mrs. John Davis, $5 from Mr. and Mrs. William MacPherson, $10 from Mr. and Mrs. Manuel B. Rego, and $5.06 from George L. Millard.
Nicholas Mancieri’s Jack's Tap will receive the John G Stewart Trophy for the third straight year for the Mile of Pennies drive, securing permanent possession. The award was announced at the Fourth of July committee meeting at the YMCA library. Vincent Fasano stressed protocol for the parade, noting correspondence with Washington and adherence to official guidelines. An extra two days was granted for Miss Fourth of July applications, with judging on July 3 at Reynolds School by Rhodes officers. The winner will attend the Ball in the armory and be crowned the next day, then ride in the parade hosted by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
