Legion Post Receives Arthur W. Henius Award

Kearney Post No. 6 American Legion earned the Arthur W. Henius award for Bristol area community service at the 34th annual state convention in Providence. Alternate delegates from Kearney and its auxiliary attended. the Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corps led the Fifth Division in the parade. The Bristol post will hold the award for one year and a new post will receive it at the next convention.

Ist Troop Scouts In Track Meet The First Bristol Troop

The First Bristol Troop Boy Scouts held an outdoor track meet at the Tanyard during their weekly meeting. Scout winners were Robert Dennis 50 points, Michael Proto Jr 31, Floyd Ferri 22. Explorer winners Anthony Nastri 40, Frank Ruggierio 26, Carlton Pinheiro 17. Events included 50 and 100 yard dashes, standing broad jump, shot put, potato races, and wheelbarrow race. Plans forCamp Yan Goog week of July 13 and a send off for three leaders attending the National Jamboree were announced.

Fr Parella Named Chaplain for Bristol Fourth

The Rev Francis J Parella SSP son of Mr and Mrs Frank Parella of High Street will be chaplain of the Bristol Fourth of July exercises announced by Ralph G McCaw the celebration committee chairman. Parella is a Colt High School graduate now on the faculty of Queen of Apostles Seminary Derby NY and a member of the Society of St Paul. He helped found St Pauls Monastery Canfield Ohio and was ordained May 31 1947.

Bristol Skipper Leaves Yosemite

Captain Eliot Olsen succeeds Captain Laurence C. Baldauf as Commanding Officer of the Atlantic Destroyer Force flagship USS Yosemite at Melville Rhode Island. Baldauf transfers to the Bureau of Ordnance Washington DC after one year in command. Olsen, a Naval Academy graduate 1927, served extensively in submarines including USS Grayling and USS Blackfish and held submarine and war college posts in the Pacific and Newport.

Bristol Opens Playground Season with 1000 Children Present

Bristol marked the opening day of its 10 week playground season as about 1000 children attended at the town beach and the common. Recreation director Anthony Agatiello announced the figure and a schedule of events for Veterans Park and the common including sports, contests, and life saving instruction.

Ocean Crossing Doctor Heads To Newfoundland From Bristol

Irish born Dr Joseph E Cunningham leaves Bristol for Newport to board a small cutter and sail alone to Newfoundland. He plans to resume practice in Placentia after a 800 mile voyage, having previously treated 22 coastal settlements from a cabin cruiser.

Barboza Promoted to Private First Class in Army

James G. Barboza Jr. of 14 John Street has been promoted to private first class with the Army's 4th Infantry Division in Germany. He entered the Army in March 1952 and trained at Fort Dix before serving with Company G of the 8th Regiment. His parents reside at 185 Market Street, Warren, and he was a truck driver in civilian life.
