Bishop Perry led the annual confirmation for 29 candidates at St Michael s Church as a bas relief portrait of the late rector Dr Locke was unveiled. The service featured hymns prayers and a dedicatory address praising faithful service.
The memorial tablet honoring Dr George Lyman Locke, rector of the parish since 1919, was crafted by New York sculptor J E Fraser. The tablet, 54 feet high and three feet wide, features a bas relief likeness in priestly robes with inscription dedicating it to the glory of God and memory of the physician and rector.
Under orders from Admiral Wilson six destroyers including the Porter Cummings Wadsworth Wainwright Downs and Parker are assigned to the town for the Fourth of July. Lieutenant Stuart D Truesdale commands with the Porter as flagship. They arrive July 3 and remain until July 5.
A special summer social for Association members and their friends begins at 8 PM at the Y. Bowling will be the feature with refreshments served on the alleys throughout the evening. All young people seeking a pleasant night are urged to attend.
Val Soards a U S S Utah sailor, shot clerk Joseph DiVoni in the Bristol Hotel as two companions, Edward Crashof and Edward Newhall, faced the same night. DiVoni treated then sent to R I Hospital. Soards arrested. Crashof and Newhall charged with drunkenness. Bail set at 2000 dollars.
Howard Saucier a former member of the local police force was sentenced by Judge Hahn in the Superior Court to seven years in State Prison for breaking and entering. He had previous sentences totaling seven years on related indictments and two more concurrent terms, with two indictments still pending.
