Korean War hero and ex commander meet at Fort Benning
Cpl John R Soares, son of Manuel Soares of East State Street, reunited with his former company commander Capt Edward Bruger at the Harmony Church weapons pool at Fort Benning Georgia. They had fought together in Korea with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division, and endured wounds frostbite and a grueling three day escape behind enemy lines. They later recovered in Murphy Army Hospital Waltham and Walter Reed.

Bristol Drum and Bugle Corps Goes Independent From Scouts
The Nar ragansett Council announces the Bristol Boy Scout Bugle and Drum Corps will become an independent organization this summer after 40 years as a Boy Scout unit. It will be called Kearney Post American Legion Juniors until a new name is chosen. The move allows non Scouts to join the band and enables contests beyond Scouting. Members who are Scouts will stay with their troops. George R. Fish remains Scoutmaster of Troop 1 Bristol. Scout Executive J Harold Williams hails the change as a chance to focus the corps as a pure musical unit after its jamborees rallies parades and Camp Yawgoog ceremonies and many championships.

The 400 foot Mertie B Crowley, famed among Penobscot Bay shipbuilders, sank on the Wasque Shoals off Martha’s Vineyard. A heroic rescue occurred during the wreck, prompting Edward Rowe Snow’s tellings shared with Chief Worcester of the Coast Guard.

A sequence of incidents involving the schooner Mertle B begins March 13 1900 with a collision off Highland Light against the barge Schuylkill and a beached Z while Crowley proceeds. A December 19 1909 stranding on Shoals near Nantucket ends with freeing and voyage resumed. Five weeks later January 21 1910 a snow storm and gale off Long Island lasts three hours with Captain Haskell Ida and crew aboard the schooner.
