Captain Paul A. Herzig and engineer Manny Sousa rescued a sailor from an eight foot rowboat off Prudence Island after it capsized near Sandy Point. A second sailor, Jack Henry Wachmuth Jr. of Superior Wisconsin, drowned despite nearby PT boats and rapid response from Melville.

Ten Per Cent Wage Increase at U. S. Rubber Plant
The War Labor Board announced a retroactive 10 cent per hour wage raise for about 1300 Bristol plant workers of the United States Rubber Company effective February 2. Bristol School Board backs community canning project
The Bristol School Committee voted to cooperate with the Bristol Canning Committee to use Reynolds School kitchen from July 15 to October for winter food prep. Mrs Charles M Connery chairs the canning group and Mrs Lowse Masters will supervise. No fee but one eighth of canned produce to be left for school lunch. Kitchen open five days weekly with pressure cookers to be provided.

Colt Memorial defeated Warren 7 to 3 at Pierce Field East Providence to clinch the Southern Suburban League crown.
