Sailor Rescued After Boat Capsizes Off Prudence Island

Captain Paul A. Herzig and engineer Manny Sousa rescued a sailor from an eight foot rowboat off Prudence Island after it capsized near Sandy Point. A second sailor, Jack Henry Wachmuth Jr. of Superior Wisconsin, drowned despite nearby PT boats and rapid response from Melville.

Bishop Bennett to Confirm Class at St Michael’s Church

The Rt Rev Granville Bennett will confirm a class at 11 o clock Sunday morning at St Michael’s Church and preach the sermon. Members of St Alban’s Lodge No 64 F and A M will attend the service in a body. The rector A R Parshley arranged the order of divine worship including hymns and prayers.

The Bristol Yacht Club will hold its spring meeting at the clubhouse Friday evening at oclock. Plans for opening the clubhouse will be considered and acted upon along with other business. A full attendance is requested per secretary Charles Otten Jr.

Legion Auxiliary names delegates to state convention

Mrs Pauline Bullock president and Miss Helen Condon along with Mrs Anne Seymour were chosen delegates to the State Convention of the American Legion at the Kearney Unit meeting. Alternate delegates are Miss Mary Peters and Mrs Elizabeth Carr.

Children Day Services at First Congregational Church

The Primary School of the First Congregational Church will hold Children’s Day exercises Sunday at 3 PM in the DeWolf Memorial Chapel directed by Mrs William Heo Remieres superintendent. Certificates will be awarded to Cradle Roll babies and Sunday School pupils. A program of songs recitations and a dialogue will be given by Primaries Department pupils. Clyde Pendleton is Sunday School superintendent and Mrs. Maron Munro will be the pianist.

Ten Per Cent Wage Increase at U. S. Rubber Plant

The War Labor Board announced a retroactive 10 cent per hour wage raise for about 1300 Bristol plant workers of the United States Rubber Company effective February 2. The ruling keeps the union security clause in force, requiring members to stay in the union for the contract duration, but employment does not require joining the union.

Industrial Division Leads Bristol Fourth of July Parade

The Bristol Manufacturing Company accepted the invitation to enter the Industrial Division of the July 5 parade. The 243rd Coast Artillery Band will march, WAACs may send a detachment, and Bristol Council of Defense plans are urged. A large Newport sailors detachment is expected, with progress on other celebration matters also reported.

A special Bristol Council meeting and Knights of Columbus session are scheduled for this evening at a specified hour to act on the deaths of Captain Henry P. Trudell and Dr. Charles F. Callers. Grand Knight Augustine B. Nerone announced the arrangements.

Pacheco Couple Mark 25th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Manuel Pacheco of 101 Charles Street celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a Sunday afternoon chicken dinner and reception. Their daughter Beatrice hosted as guests from Providence Taunton and this town attended. Special invited guests included Manuel Cruz and Pvt George Viello US Army. A mock wedding and a photograph were part of the event.

Bristol School Board backs community canning project

The Bristol School Committee voted to cooperate with the Bristol Canning Committee to use Reynolds School kitchen from July 15 to October for winter food prep. Mrs Charles M Connery chairs the canning group and Mrs Lowse Masters will supervise. No fee but one eighth of canned produce to be left for school lunch. Kitchen open five days weekly with pressure cookers to be provided.

Memorial Committee Deliberates Brig Gen Callan Tribute

The Callan Memorial Committee met Friday evening in the chairman's office and considered several memorial wall suggestions for Brig Gen uke H Callan. No decision was reached and a follow up meeting with Rotary Club Knights of Columbus and Kearney Post No. 6 American Legion was planned.

Colt Memorial Suburban Champion Secures Title With 7 3 Victory

Colt Memorial defeated Warren 7 to 3 at Pierce Field East Providence to clinch the Southern Suburban League crown. Colt will face the Northern Division champion Friday for the suburban title in an undecided venue. Colt scored in the first and fourth innings adding runs in the eighth and ninth while Warren added runs in the sixth and ninth.

Japanese American Combat Team at Camp Shelby Form Motto Go for Broke

The Japanese American Combat Team at Camp Shelby Tennessee adopts Go for Broke as its motto and coats of arms. Nisei volunteers, mostly from Hawaii and relocation centers, train on red clay fields, earning praise for discipline and low grievance. They have bought War Bonds worth 101 550 and sent 247 Mother’s Day telegrams.
