Baseballs From Foul Balls and Stitching Have Surprisingly Rich History
A vivid piece recounts crowds chasing fouled baseballs in stands and the craft of hand stitching every major league ball at the Chicopee plant. It notes workers sew 40 to 60 balls daily with two needles, using waxed twine, and that 108 stitches complete a ball. It also explains identical balls in both leagues except for labeling, cites a 1925 cork center innovation, and highlights the vast yearly ball usage by 16 teams totaling about 180,000 dollars in balls.
