Sentry dogs of Okinawa turn from pets to fearsome guards

Fifty nine dogs once trained as gentle scout dogs in Korea are now kept on Okinawa as sentry beasts. For months they endure harsh agitation and constant chaining to maintain discipline under Okinawan handlers. The dogs act in demonstrations and can maul a fake intruder.

Fourth of July parade gains brass bands and civic chiefs

The celebration committee announced a parade dominated by brass bands and marching units with three honorary Chiefs of Staff from Bristol County towns Dr. Samuel D. Clark Fred E. Lohse and Fred J. Jannitto appointed by Lt. Col. Everett E. McMillan. Two bagpipe bands from Worcester and Providence join six brass bands. Fund drive totals $1,437.34 toward a $2,000 goal as “not at home” envelopes lag. Miss Fourth of July entries open at Ferris Store YMCA Building with a June 27 deadline.

St Mary's School to Graduate 23 Tonight

St Marys Grammar School plans graduation exercises for 23 pupils with Mary Jane Vorro and William Manchester receiving top scholastic awards. Holy Communion will be taken at a 7 p.m Mass, followed by refreshments, diploma awards, and a dance in the church auditorium. Perfect attendance prizes go to Marie Andrade, Dorothy Quintal, and Priscilla Serpa.

Seniors at Bristol High School earn diplomas and hear urging

Eighty-two Bristol Senior High School graduates received diplomas in Andrews Gym. Dr John Ross of Brown University urged grads to accept responsibility behind rights and liberty. Class president Joseph Margo delivered the welcome, with five advising points from Francis Duarte.

Eagles Initiate Large Class in Bristol Aerie Ceremonies

The Bristol Aerie No. 953 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles initiated 15 new members in a ceremony led by the East Providence Aerie Degree team. The class was dedicated to the memory of Past Grand Worthy President Raymond P. McElroy who had died recently.
