Coast Guard Tender Spar Shifts to Bristol Base

The 185 foot diesel powered tender Spar transfers from Wood’s Hole to Bristol Depot bringing 50 ship personnel to the base. The move aids navigation buoy service from Watch Hill to No Man’s Land and seven nearby lightships while boosting local housing and business demand. The crew of about 40 men, led by Lt. Arthur A. Fontaine, enjoys good morale with in ship television radio and laundry facilities. Housing efforts by Bristol residents aided the transfer effective June first.

Royal Arch Masons Elect And Install At Hope Chapter

Hope Chapter Royal Arch Masons elected and installed John A. Martin as high priest at the annual meeting in Masonic Hall. Installation was by A Butler Williams with Abram M. Fraser assisting. Other officers named include Coggeshall, Meiggs Jr., Bullock, Stewart, Waitt, Jillson, Gruenwald, Darling, and King. Harold W. Thatcher presented a framed General Grand Chapter membership award. A supper followed. dignitaries included Edward S. Pratt and Charles Manchester.

Daughters of Isabella Outline Summer Activities Big Ride

The Daughters of Isabella announced a busy summer plan including a mystery ride on July 18 from the K of C hall and a lawn party and bridge hosted by Mrs. Margaret Jordan of Warren on August 18. They also organized a bridal shower for Beatrice Lucy Lavoie at the K of C hall with a tier table presentation, led by Mrs. Mary Conners and committee.

Bristol Fire Department Seeks Emergency Rescue Truck

Fire Chief Norman J. Servant announced plans to acquire a new 6 cylinder emergency rescue truck for the Bristol department. Bids run until June 15 with opening June 18 and the vehicle may serve as an ambulance when Colt Memorial is busy.

May Dump Fires Cost Town $908.96

Town council heard figures showing May dump fires cost $908.96 including dirt, fill, and labor. Fire department bills totaled $327.56 for labor and expenses from fires on May 8 10 19 and 23, with council favoring extending a water line to the dump to help prevent future blazes.

Veterans Plan Park Renovation At Wood St Memorial

A Bristol Veterans' Council subcommittee appealed for aid to finish the Wood Street Memorial Park surface to be used for Little League and other youths. Albert P. Russo urged contractors with subsoil to contact him at the Veterans' Home. Final plans are set for Sunday June 17 with Castel Construction and town trucks sought to move topsoil.

Raymond Newbold earns a Bachelor of Science in chemistry cum laude from Providence College. Domenic Raiola completes a Bachelor of Arts in education and plans for a Master’s degree. Yale grants 14 Rhode Island degrees and URI ROTC will commission 42 seniors as second lieutenants this summer. Springfield College confers two more bachelor degrees in physical education.

C B Rockwell's 54 foot yawl Belisarius is among 18 Rhode Island boats in the annual spring cruise starting today from New London.
